No country and no people are consciously on the path of self-destruction. Despotic controlling leaders who act without conscience are capable of leading their stressed and brain-dead populations to ruin. But it is never a choice, never a collective conscious decision. If Iran is on the path to self-destruction, the USA could be its textbook.
The idea that people in other countries are soulless monsters hellbent on killing us is truly exemplary of the media and our leaders' ability to rape our minds. It's amazing how ridiculous the claims can become when people no longer think for themselves.

It seems that some people are not able to understand the world as anything more than some sort of grand morality play. Reality doesn't matter. They are happy to have their villains created for them out of whole cloth, merely for the chance to hiss and boo at appropriate moments.
The real villains, of course, are those who pander to them...
Why do you ask? I love my fellow man but do not like them. Call me what you want. If I punched you in the face you would hate me and you dont even know me. The same thing.
If you did that, I'd respond IMMEDIATELY and APPROPRIATELY. In other words, I'd make sure you never did it to me again.
LOTS of nations have gone 'down' the path of self destruction...and virtually ALL of them were dictatorships....Such National self destruction and dictatorial regimes...those that have the support tacit or otherwise of the people or a totally complaisant populace.... go hand in hand.
Communist Russia was a COMPLETELY self-destructive social political entity. Both Lenin and Stalin believed and acted on these beliefs, that the nation should perish if it could not live up to THEIR standards....
Nazi Germany....same story...Hitler believed that the German people should die...because THEY failed HIM....And the people STILL supported Hitler...to the end...
Imperialist Fascist Japan...again....same story...the Government 'leaders' wanted to waste the entire nation of Japan..and all her people in a 'final moment of glory' fighting to the very last person...[we hear this line quite a lot from the dictators...die for me to the last man....woman...child...]...and the Japanese people were TOTALLY willing to do so....they WANTED to die and kill as many Americans and British as they possibly could in the process...

Fascist Italy...a rare example....realized that they'd better make a change and to their credit deposed Il Duce themselves...and allied with the UK/US forces....and were very much the wiser for it....
North Korea is a nation waiting to implode...and self destruct.....Anyone with even a shred of intelligence can clearly see just how crazed and mutated the entire North Korean Socio-political environment is......Honestly...it's a cult in the extreme...and just like most cults...they promote self destructive hero worship to the detriment of everyone and everything around them....and themselves as well...[ever see night time satellite photos of the Korean Peninsula? Notice the difference between North and South Korea?]....North Korea can't feed house clothe educate or help it's own people...In addition to all that is the fact that the North Korean Government systematically kills its own people...They have set up a HUGE military system that is WAY out of proportion to her legitimate defense needs....solely to be a regional threat....and a threat that the North Koreans are hoping will gather the international and more pointedly the American response they, the North Koreans, so desperately WANT. The North Koreans WANT to get into a war with the U.S...Just like the Iranians do...Both these "powers" want to start huge regional and perhaps even global conflicts....Indeed North Korea can't afford to FEED ITSELF....but is sure has the money for a huge military....Nuclear Weapon Technology exportation [..to Syria and God only knows where else...] and foreign aid.....and money for huge palaces and "peoples museums" full of junk given to the "great leader"...Dr. Ill......etc etc...
Pol Pots Cambodia...[Kampuchea]...a TOTALLY self-destructive "society" and a self destruction [among all the others] that deserves...no requires....much more in depth study....WHY do such self deceptive and self destructive regimes hold such allegiance from the very people...[their OWN people] who will ultimately suffer and DIE at the hands of the very same regime?....It's BEYOND weird....Like Iraq as well....They LOVED Saddam...yet Saddam murdered them with ease....So why the continued allegiance and love for Saddam?
Iran....is in much the same condition as other dictatorships mentioned above...What little progress Iran has made is continually held in check by a dictatorial regime that seems bent on starting a mutually self destructive nuclear war with Israel in the Middle East.....with the United States...and indeed with the entire Western World....Look at what is coming out of Iran...the talk...the rhetoric....Look at their continued attempts to start fights with the US....the UK....etc...These are acts far beyond a nation simply trying to gain some degree of independence on the world stage....They, the Iranians [or at least their government and a significant section of their society] must truly believe that they are going to have some sort of 'empire'....or go up in a big religiously meaningful and purifying 'flash' attempting to gain such an empire....
So...YES...The Iranian Government IS on a self destructive path....and they want to take plenty of others with them.....obviously.....

Well, America then, is a country on a self destructive path if I ever saw one. We start an economy-busting war, and have no moral compunction of the million or so deaths that have resulted from it. Where is the high ground morality in that? How does this make us better than the Iranians? Who have they attacked recently? Their use of nuclear reactors was started with our help. Now we want to use that as an excuse to bomb them.
Have YOU asked an Iranian is he/she is choosing a path of 'self-destruction'? They are quite modern and well educated. You might get a surprise.
Part of my original quandry. We say we are not at odds with the people, just the govt, but nuclear war affects far more than those in power. The powerful seem to only ever want to obliterate populations vs going after the other powerful. Leaders can be replaced much easier than many mothers and fathers, aunts and uncles, sons and daughters.

I have not seen Iran launch a pre-emptive strike against anyone yet, yet we have, and want to do so again. What is fascism? If a country launches pre-emptive strikes against countries that they suspect of having weapons, silences their national media via corporate control, secretly tortures suspects without giving them due process, spies on it's citizens, engages in toppling governments seen as 'unfriendly' - if that is a definition of 'fascism', then I submit that we are closer to that definition right now than the Iranians are.
America, the United States has regular and routine democratic election processes that go from the federal level all the way down to the smallest municipality...We have a system where people get to have their say...and vote....from new taxes for better sidewalks....to the Chief Executive...
And we OBVIOUSLY have a wide open media and judiciary where NO politician, no person is immune from the most probing and destructive scrutiny.....and if they're found 'lacking' they loose their jobs and/or go to jail....[well aside from guys like Mayor Marion Barry WELCOME BACK! How was the BIG house?]....
That is why the United States [even with all its faults, which are many] is still a great nation....and most definitely NOT on a self-destructive path...unlike some of our 'euuu-ro-pean' cousins...and countries under the heel of a dictator....[Iran, North Korea, Syria, Zimbabwe [Rhodesia]...China...Myanmar [Burma]...Sudan...etc]
Now...TRY to find such democratic process...and such public openness in ANY of the dictatorships I mentioned in the previous post....in any past or present dictatorships....
That's right...you WON'T.....because they're NOT present and because these open public inclusive processes are TOTALLY ABSENT...THAT is why those aforementioned nations are ultimately ON a path to self destruction....in one way or another.....Look at the Soviet Union....East Germany...Communist regimes in any of the Baltic or Central European Nations...Hungary...Poland....Czechoslovakia....AL L the dupes were thrown out...as the 'old' socialist/communist systems imploded under their own useless bulk.....imploded because their systems [if they can even be labeled as such] were inherently self-destructive....period.
Now...I'm sure that If Barak Hussein Obama...and/or Hillary Rodham Clinton get elected...the whole view of "America" both at home and abroad [at least in the [very very small] minds of the 'left'] will magically change over night....to one of....'we are here to help you'....'weee are sooo green' ....'look how goooood weeee are'....etc...etc.....and of course the media [left]..and the "academics" will trip over themselves rushing to fill themselves and each other with sunshine over how "special" and "educated" they are and how great it its....now that one of 'their' people is in power of course.............well at least until the NEXT ELECTION.....
