first off, this wasn't a thing 5 years ago. all of a sudden, they're glued to Cuomo and deblasio.
secondly, in an age where google can do on-the-fly translations and TVs have closed captioning, there's no reason to pay someone for this service.

I have a partial hearing loss and so use closed captioning all the time. Live news doesn’t offer closed caption. Even when they have the voice to text closed captioning there is a long delay and the words are garbled with symbols and misspellings. When using voice to text software it usually works well because it’s only trying to decipher one voice. Live broadcast like a news conference is filled with voices and other noises such as those loud camera motors and reporters asking questions all at the same time. Even if the reporter ask the question alone, their voice isn’t loud enough to be heard on the audio.
Next time there’s a live press conference, turn on your closed caption and see what happens. In most cases there isn’t any closed captioning available for live broadcast news conferences.

Closed captions won't help a deaf or hard of hearing person who is actually in the room where the press conference is being conducted.

If I were drunk I'd probably get a real kick out of watching them do all the retarded facial movements while signing. Nancy Pelosi's facial movements are the same and are just as entertaining to watch, even when viewing them stone cold sober.
Come to think of it, perhaps that's what Nancy Pelosi is doing when she speaks. Talking and also signing with her face. Got it!

Does it really make you that mad? Don't you think there are far more important things in life to worry about? Ignore the sign language, listen to the news conference and get on with your life.

Its been a thing for years when deemed relevant and "need to know immediately". In other words if it is something that public officials think should be known immediately to prevent confusion or dissemination of critical information then the interpreter will be used.
OMG, someone who can't hear is able to get the same information I can in real time! I hate that my rights are being trampled!!!
