Let me say at the outset that I'm no Fundamentalist hillbilly. I'm old enough to have been an adult when the "swine flu" scare, and the consequences of it, emerged back in 1975-76, and I know that the it's the dark corners of science that produce this sort of behavior.
But societal trends seem to have produced a new, over-sheltered generation with too much faith in the opinion of supposed "experts" (even Swedish teenagers) -- and It appears that this has been magnified by the growth of social media.
I also recognize that when what's perceived as a possible major threat emerges, it's best to err on the side of caution. But this event was clearly hijacked by a close-knit clique of self-proclaimed "progressives"; they in turn are fully aware of the existence of a substantial component of easily-swayed "swing voters".
And it was the deliberate, politically -motivated decision to take full advantage of this inevitable tragedy that got us to where we were this morning.

LOL. Look right now barring a surprise vaccine this is whats going to happen. People who do not comprehend exponential growth will open up states that have flattened their curve, but not managed to move it down because of idiots who think this is nonsense and overblown, and we will resume our exponential growth pattern we saw in the past. States that do this better will share borders with states that do not and also have a hard time, but for those states that open with no restrictions, they will see a massive spike in deaths. And they will stay open because having done this, they will be too emotionally invested in it to change course.
Spanish flu is a great historical example. 2 million dead in the first wave, 20 million in the second. And we have utterly failed to learn from history. We're fortunate that this is not as deadly as that one was. I will not be surprised if this one hits a million deaths within 12 months.

Absolutely.
I just posted separate thread with detailed analysis of each of multiple reasons they had exploited (well, unless they caused it or participated in causing it).
I'm one of the many people who were Independent or even willing to support Democrats, who'll now vote for Trump: just to teach Karen's and paranoid, irrational and totalitarian Democrats one hard life's lesson, so that they'll never try this totalitarian tactics here again

if we do not see a massive spike in the fall, this is going to kill democrats politically. if we do see a massive spike in the fall this is going to kill republicans politically.

Even if there's a spike...it's a normal course of all respiratory flu-like diseases and inevitable.
It's no big deal and nothing to cry wolf about.
It's life, one needs to get over it.
It's enough to listen to chief Swedish (and WHO) epidemiologist talking about it: it's the path all countries will have to go through SOONER OR LATER. No avoiding, it's normal, it's life.

You bring up some interesting points but when you say it will backfire, what do you mean?
