On a side Note: Masks cure COVID, by attaching to the outside???
Quote:
Kim and colleagues examined data from four COVID-19 patients admitted to negative pressure isolation rooms. They were instructed to cough five times each onto separate petri dishes while wearing no mask, a surgical mask, a reusable 100% cotton mask, and no mask again.
Nasopharyngeal and saliva samples had a median viral load of 5.66 log copies/mL and 4.00 log copies/mL, respectively. However, median viral loads for patients without a mask, with a surgical mask, and with a cotton mask were 2.56 log copies/mL, 2.42 log copies/mL, and 1.85 log copies/mL, respectively. Interestingly, swabs from the outside of the mask were positive for SARS-CoV-2, while most swabs from the inside of the mask were negative, the authors said.
The only 100% effective mask is with a biosuit. The others just provide a reduction in transmission odds. That's why you still need other measures such as social distancing and/or additional barriers.
"The researchers acknowledged that the study didn't examine actual transmission of COVID-19 illness nor whether the masks "shorten the travel distance of droplets during coughing." Whether face masks decrease transmission from asymptomatic individuals with COVID-19 or those who are not coughing needs further study, they added."
Since these are the main two reasons why folks should wear a mask - the headline, the report, and this thread only serve as (useless) ammo to the anti-mask crowd. Many of them will only read your subject line - and not bother reading the report. This just makes things worse.
It was never meant to stop 100% of the virus. That was never the point. The hope was it would reduce the distance that it travels out of your mouth during "regular" things like talking or breathing by people who are asymptomatic.

Agree, Seems like an irresponsible thread. I was out yesterday and far fewer people were wearing masks than just a few days before. Even if a mask is only 50% effective, that might just be enough to get you from getting it.
Doesn’t look like they tested the N95 mask/respirators which are NIOSH approved and state they protect down to .2 ml.
But I think they only protect the wearers — the germs can still get through the little nozzle part when exhaling as the flap, opens I think.

And what happens when people that are relatively healthy, and not already dying of old age or something else "GETS IT"? NOTHING, or maybe the sniffles.

So the study didn’t examine the main reason we wear the masks in the first place.
If masks are not effective, I guess we should stop wearing them during surgery. Anyone with common sense can figure out that coughing or sneezing into a mask will spread less aerosol and droplets than coughing or sneezing into thin air. Are the masks perfect? No. This is why a surgeon that sneezes is supposed to resist the natural urge to turn their head to the side. There is some leakage out the sides of the mask, so a surgeon facing the open wound will be less likely to contaminate the surgical field if he continues to face forward during the sneeze rather than turn his/her head. Of course, this is just for when the sneeze is spontaneous and without warning. If he/she feels the sneeze coming on, the best thing is to step back away from the patient, and still face in the direction of the patient without turning the head.
The test isn't valid. In the real world, a person infected with COVID-19 isn't likely to be rude and crazy enough to go up to you and cough 5 times on your mask.
If you want the economy to pick up you should encourage mask wearing and social distancing.
