China’s foreign ministry Wednesday said U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has done serious damage to U.S.-Chinese relations a day after he congratulated the Taiwanese president on her second term. The ministry said Pompeo’s statement “seriously violated” the one-China principle, according to Bloomberg.
“China urges the US side to immediately correct its mistakes,” the ministry said in a statement posted on its website Wednesday. “The Chinese side will take necessary countermeasures to respond to the above-mentioned erroneous actions by the US side. And the US side should bear the consequences arising therefrom.”
Pompeo is the highest ranking U.S. official to congratulate President Tsai Ing-Wen on her inauguration and the first U.S. secretary of state to applaud a Taiwanese president on their election, the country said, according to the South China Morning Post.
China also took exception to Pompeo referring to Tsai as "president."
Of course the ChiComs regard Taiwan as a wayward province, which must be recaptured and incorporated into the Chinese nation, by force if necessary. Back in the real world, Taiwan has functioned as an independent nation since 1949, and was recognized by most countries as the rightful government of mainland China for the first 20 years after that. As discussed in the article above, Taiwan is a democracy, while the CCP ruled mainland China is a totalitarian dictatorship.
We all saw how well their efforts were to undermine the rights of the people of Hong Kong a few months ago. What a fiasco that was. President Xi ultimately had to stand down. So he is probably not eager to repeat that experience again any time soon, as he almost assuredly would if he tried anything like that with the nation of Taiwan. Thankfully, the Chinese are not militarily anywhere strong enough impose themselves on Taiwan, at least not yet.
So this reaction by the Chinese (three different statements by the CCP government - from their foreign, defence and Taiwan affairs departments) is yet another display of their deep seated insecurities associated with their inability to dictate to and to impose themselves on everyone else around them.
Are there any more prickly and hypersensitive national leaders on Earth than the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which rules China without any domestic rivalry or accountability? Based on their reaction to this congratulations message here today, it appears not.
This is all very sad and not good for the social well being of the international community of human beings on this planet. The Chinese should stop acting out like this.
Taiwan cannot accept becoming part of China under its ‘one country, two systems’ offer of autonomy, President Tsai Ing-wen said as she was sworn in for her second and final term:
Of course she is exactly right. It would be the end of all liberty in Taiwan and the beginning of a surreal horror show that the people of Taiwan would forever regret.
All they have to do is look about 450 miles to the Southwest. Hong Kong is seeing first hand how the one country two systems is a slow march to death.

China says Pompeo's congratulations to Taiwan president has seriously damaged relations
Actually, China's continual efforts to enslave Taiwan the way they're trying to enslave Hong Kong, is what's damaging relations.
Great point. This needs to be repeated frequently. However, the ChiComs might not like it.
