You suppose in the afterlife, the fallen are muttering obscenities about dying in vain for a lost cause?
Probably shaking their heads in disbelief that Americans can't handle a few sacrifices to protect their own health.

What freedoms are being stripped, exactly?

Looks like a chilly, damp, overcast day on the boardwalk. No wonder not many people are out today.

Today's a holiday. Take a vacation from the conspiracy theories.

My thoughts exactly.

See above about taking a holiday from the crackpot theories. Give those wild eyes a rest!
Anybody else tired of seeing "Happy Memorial Day". I even had a friend say thanks for everybody who is serving. Completely didn't mention anybody who has died from a war/serving which is what the day is actually about.
There is nothing Happy about this day.
It's a day to remember and honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
FDR was one of the most Socialist presidents we ever had. Didn't seem like the brave soldiers of WWII had a problem with it.
No internet!
As a now retired doc I cared for thousands of patients that endured the Great Depression and WW2. And I can remember very few who had any disparaging remarks about FDR. Almost all only had good things to reflect on and say. Including many Veterans.
They gave up their lives so you can be free to whine about wearing a mask in Costco. They did not give up their lives to deny Costco the right to set their own policies.
Well, if you are willing to sacrifice the freedoms and the way of life they sacrificed their lives in order to protect.....yeah, they gave their lives for nothing.
That said, most in the military know that civilians are garbage anyway, so none of it would really surprise them.
It's probably more of an "apolitical" point but regardless I can't think of a better way to honor people who believe they died for our freedom than to question whether or not we're really free.
Normally on this weekend, I am in DC so that my aunt and I (with our spouses) can go to Arlington Cemetary to visit my grandfather's ashes. He didn't die in WW II, but he did earn the Bronze Star during the Battle of Hurtgen Forest. We have a letter he wrote to his sister (my great aunt) from a foxhole two nights before the action that earned him that medal. In that letter, he asks the question about the meaning of the whole thing, is it worth it, what exactly are you fighting when you fight, how should you feel, etc.
And knowing him over the first 48 years of my life, he questioned government, politics, the necessity of wars, and all of it. He did so all the time. In fact, if I get these anarchist tendencies from anyone in my family, I get them from him. Ironically, he and I are the only two people in 5 generations of my family to serve, both in wars (his more dramatic than mine, for sure, but I do have combat action ribbons).
He would have agreed with you, and he would've given a stern tut-tut to people who question how other people choose to think of this day. Thinking for yourself was a big deal to my grandfather. I recall numerous conversations with him about war, the silliness of world leaders, how wars are about economics, etc.
So today we honor those "who died while defending our freedoms" yet much of the country has been/ is locked up.
You suppose in the of foreign governments renting rooms in his hotel and leaving them empty; , the fallen are muttering obscenities about dying in vain for a lost cause?
I think in their "afterlife" they will KNOW we are in an unusual situation and would rather people be safe and stay alive rather then going to a ceremony.
Some have very vivid imaginations.
