Interesting piece from Sunday NYT that basically lays out what oneself and others have said for years... Federal government (Congress, POTUS....) do not have belly to end illegal migration because it benefits huge swaths of US economy.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/01/m...migration.html

Pick one; agriculture, hospitality, janitorial/cleaning, construction, child and elder care, domestic service and so many more hugely depend upon cheap (often illegal) migrant labor. Everyone knows this including politicians from both sides of aisle. Their donors tell them it's ok to go after someone else's "illegal labor", but leave theirs alone.

This is across the board. In conservative south, mid-west and out west it's agriculture. Everything from farms to poultry processing plants rely heavily on illegal labor. Often as NYT has been exposing lately children and young teens who are illegals are employed by such places.

POTUS and politicians talk out of both sides of their faces on this issue.

On one side all we hear is about stronger boarder enforcement and yada, yada, yada. This does not touch simple fact previous several administrations have failed to increase number of immigration judges or clerks. Nor have funds been increased to hire and train more immigration and labor inspectors. These are the ones who go out in field to ferret out places and or persons who hire illegal aliens. Example; California IIRC there are < 5 immigration inspectors for entire state. New York and other areas aren't much better either.

Very long story short illegal aliens, migrants and or whatever you want to call them keep coming to USA because it's a well known fact; upon arrival their chances of being deported are slim *and* they will find work. It's also a well known fact life as a many Americans know it would come to a halt if illegal aliens were gone or numbers substantially declined.

Both Biden and Obama pretty much confirmed all this by issuing EOs directing immigration *NOT* to go after illegal aliens unless they were criminals. Everyone else who is "working" (which is not legal by the way) was to be left in peace.

If illegal immigration is so great, why are Democratic mayors now whining about the number of illegals flooding their cities?

Not to mention that terrorists have blended in with the illegal migrants and infiltrated the US.

RINOs and liberals have ruined the country with their greed.

We need some legal immigrants, not anyone who can get across the border.

Respectfully, this is a ridiculous justification for the Federal government's dereliction.
"We" don't need millions of unvetted, illegal immigrants. Certain industries want them for cheap labor. But there are already programs in place to accommodate those wants..
And far Left political elements want them to aid the demographic transformation of America. But that again is not a need, it is a self-interested desire./peace

It was created and sponsored by Big Government and Big Business as an economic use as modern slavery.

Sort of a take off from the South.

Illegal migration works?

Then why did liberals deport all Haitians from the southern border?
Quote:
WASHINGTON/PORT-AU-PRINCE, Aug 31 (Reuters) - The United States will continue deporting Haitian migrants back to their country, a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security said on Thursday, amid worsening gang warfare that prompted it a day earlier to urge its own citizens to evacuate.

Progressives: "C'mon in Latin America!"

Also Progressives: "No Haitians! Border is closed! Deport now!

I will say some of the hardest working people I know have been Hispanic "immigrants", many who came here illegally and they've benefited the country by their work and adherence to our laws (except immigration laws). So there is some validity to OP argument. However, we're now getting huge numbers of immigrants that we know nothing about and no doubt many are terrorist that our enemies have placed.

My preference is still to stop the illegals at the border, screen them, and take the ones that have job skills we need, and then make them legal immigrants.

Pretty much, and they get to tax the hell out of the middle class and devalue their dollar so the rich have their cheap labor. And it's a never ending cycle. At one time, it were the Irish and other Europeans coming to the US and they were often uneducated so the only jobs they could get were the dirty jobs like coal mining. But once the next generation was coming along, educated and started to campaign for miner's rights, the coal mines were magically shut down. You can bet the same thing will happen to the Hispanic migrant worker. There will come a time when the next generation (and make no mistake, they are already here) are becoming more educated and will fight for human rights, this is when the rich will bring in the robots. Heck, why do you think Walmart, one of the biggest employers of migrant workers, was the first to start self checkout lanes?

If either political party was serious about illegal immigration, they would demand significant penalties for hiring Illegal immigrants.

Roofing companies, restaurants, chicken factories, lettuce farms, ... all make money by having a steady supply of willing workers.

There is a system involving work permits, but it seems many companies do not want to spend the time and money to use that system, complaining that it is cumbersome.

A few are caught here and there, but as they are often right back to hiring people without the proper paperwork, hard not to reach the conclusion that the fines are not a deterrent, but rather merely the cost of doing business.

I stopped reading at the 5th word - NYT. Whatever lies they are printing are left wing propaganda, and the paper itself is best used for lining the bottom of birdcages.
