No system is perfect, but there are poor, fair, good, better or best choices.

Mail in ballots/voting is poor IMO. Mail in is "different" in a bad way, than absentee ballots.

Death information IS already sent to the states, so deceased people are removed from voter registration. States get Death Certificates from the Dept of Health, they get Social Security Death data and they even remove dead voters from the rolls based on obituaries. However, this doesn't happen the day after someone dies, as there is a time period for this data to be processed. For example, a death certificate doesn't get issued the day after someone dies.

As far as Delaware, one must provide Social Security Number, Date of Birth and signature on the Application for Absentee Ballot. Someone that moved into the voter's old apartment won't have SSN, DOB and the signature wont match. And this is just for the Application to get the blank ballot mailed.

Once the absentee ballot arrives, it must be signed and dated. Delaware matches the signature on the ballot against the signature on file from the voter registration form. If signature doesn't match, the vote doesn't get counted.

Florida also matches signature on the ballot against the signature on the voter registration form. If the signatures don't match, Florida doesn't count the vote. Approx 1% of Florida ballots are thrown out due to signature mismatch. There are a lot of legit voters that get their vote thrown out because the signature doesn't match their original voter registration form's signature.

An imposter wouldn't been able to get away with faking the signature twice AND know the SSN AND birth date AND also have access to the person's mail. A politician in Florida had his absentee ballot vote thrown out because Florida said his signature didn't match. It was really him that voted and signed the absentee ballot. His vote didn't count.
I'm using you as a marker although a couple things you said were somewhat inaccurate.

As someone living in a state where all voting is done by mail/drop box...how exactly?

Living in other states either in person voting was a horrible experience in comparison. Waiting in lines in the rain/snow. Polling station was a church. Having to take off work early to go vote. Buggy machines they would have to close down. No thank you. All voting should be done by mail/drop box with hand filled out ballots and a signed envelope.

When the voter rolls are not updated, and people move around within a state, then the ballots are not even sent to their addresses. So it's a false assumption to think the state is actually going to send a ballot to your house, when they may not even know where you live, because they are not updating their voter rolls
What state does that?

Do you know the difference between "collecting" and "mailing" ballots?

If I drop my ballot in one of the drop boxes setup around town it gets collected directly, otherwise I drop it in the mailbox slot to be mailed...

Or are you referring to “harvesting” which is controversial? With Nunes saying that was the only way for Republicans to win.

A drop box is not federally protected under the law and tampering would carry no weight.

tRump votes by mail.

tRump gets tested for C19 every day. So does everyone who comes near him.

He says YOU don't need testing

He says YOU shouldn't be able to vote by mail.

Like a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs...

...He's scared.
