Violent protestors really don't give a damn about George Floyd. They are the same ones who come from all over for the looting and violence. Foreign governments hoping to divide and overthrow our government support many of the groups like Antifa. They will do anything to divide America and it is apparently working, thanks to many factors including the media bias.
AFA police reform, police unions are the problem. Collective bargaining allows police who have done anything outside the law, to remain in their jobs and the union pays their legal bills. The Democrats support unions and they are a big contributor to the party, so don't expect Democrats to do anything about REAL police reform.
I've been reading about Camden, NJ defunding its police several years ago. They still have a police department, but they are working more in conjunction with their community. At least that's what I'm understanding. Here is an interview between a former police chief in Camden and NPR. I found it enlightening. https://www.npr.org/2020/06/08/87247...orm-the-police
as much as "words mean things", it's a losing argument calling it "defunding". What Camden did was replace a city police force with a county-based one, though apparently they're the only city using it. And they re-hired around 1/2 the cops. Seems like they were able to reduce the budget by getting rid of the unionized force.
Not sure how getting rid of a union plays with Dems. Might be the ON union they oppose; conversely could be the ONE that Republicans favor.
some of the ideas are great - like having newbie cops meet the neighbors where they are assigned to establish a non-threatening relationship. And local police probably don't need the surplus military gear.
But that's reform, not defund or abolish, and there are plenty of calls from actual BLM for both.
The left can't seriously think Antifa groups are helping their cause at this point, they are causing chaos in the most liberal run cities like Portland and Seattle. The mob is demanding that Seattle Mayor Durkan resign. Why? The police used tear gas on the violent mob.
"Now, you have Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda listening to a man demanding cops kill themselves, and rather than condemn the threats, she justifies them. Councilmember Debora Juarez says it’s not just “a few bad apples” in the police department. She said the whole tree is rotten.
Fearing she’ll be impeached, Mayor Jenny Durkan pushed cops under the bus and sacrificed them — and their East Precinct — to placate a group of protesters that will never vote for her and a council she will never control."
Sad quote from a Seattle cop:
"I love the city that I was born in, but I’m done. I was used as cannon fodder, then blamed for inciting the violence. I’ve visited fellow officers in the hospital and we have 45 out on injuries, but the narrative is the crowds were non violent and cops are the problem."
"Every city gets the police department it deserves."
We are seeing it now go into hyper-drive. Antifa wants to completely control the streets, the mob putting extreme pressure on the Mayor to disband the police or resign or be impeached. Mob control and mental illness is taking control until someone stands up to them, which feckless democrats will never do. One thing democrats are great at, bowing down to the mob and throwing the police under the bus.
