well, you know what they say about opinion/ opinion is like a hole, everybody got one. So of course these politicians are going to express their opinions everyday. lol That is what they do.
This said, General Mattis is a great General, of that there isn't any doubt. Now how great may be up for debate. You don’t get to be a four star Marine General by kissing butt.
Gen Mattis is a legend, these politicians are right, He's a Marines' Marine, and this is it. A politician, he is not. He should have always been a war general, and he should enjoy the rest of his days away from politics. Politics is dirty job.
The fact that he couldn't get along with either Obama or Trump says that he's not a politician. I have great respect towards this man, and oh, have to add this, even though he's old, he is one sexy man! Go Gen. Mattis.
The irony is, these Republicans all praised Mattis for being honest and candor.
Until that honestly intrudes on the corrupt Republican party.

I can say the same about you Leftists. Mattis was hated by you guys when he was in Trump’s administration but now that he goes rogue, you praise and support him.
