At the Cornell Library I read a documented letter, some that took off for the North were met with hostility as well, so there is no straight black and white tale here of the past, because history is as complicated as its people and their reasons for doing things --- same as now.
Then put into play those same type of people are government representatives and the reasons for the succession, depending on the agenda as well as the prejudices of the historian ... people are angry because some one told them they should be and they believed 'em.
There are tens of thousands of individual denominations and faith groups in Christianity and one Bible --- because they can't agree on what it says. Agreement on history events and the reasons, is no different.

I'm not sure how you can put that together in making that comparison.
We have the law (government) then you have the people. The people trying to live with the (government) law.
The Institution of Slavery (law) dates back 4000 years. If a person got sideways with their debts they sold themselves into slavery to pay that debt. In the Bible it references people making a covenant with God, when they purchased the slaves in accordance to the law, they made them family members and much of that same practice was still going on in 1800s. (the trans Atlantic slave trade change things as I do not believe the Brits knew they were purchasing people who had been kidnapped from their homes, but rather paying their debts)
However, there were those that had no intention in making family members of the Slaves and some were really bad people, where as there was senseless violence, killings and hangings. The statics show, that those that owned more than 100 slaves were of 1%; it doesn't take much to make that leap --- to what would be corporate America.

Equal protections under the law seems to be the goal, then same as now, as well as decreasing corruption in the government.
