John Oliver used Sunday’s edition of his HBO show, Last Week Tonight, to defend the Black Lives Matter movement and its specific demand to “defund the police.”

In an obscene opening rant, Oliver defended protesters and mocked concerns about looting, saying that a spontaneous protest “can’t control every one of its participants.” He added, quoting an infamous prankster on a Los Angeles Police Department conference call, “Suck my dick and choke on it. **** you.”

Calling racism “a serious public health issue,” Oliver attempted to explain the current debate in terms of American culture: “America loves nothing more than a renegade cop who doesn’t play by the rules.” He claimed that “zero tolerance” policing, which emerged in the 1990s, was rooted in “white supremacy” that pervaded American society.

Oliver tried to tackle “the major obstacles to reform” in police behavior, and identified police unions as the problem, saying that they take the protection of their members to “a dangerous extreme.” He backed federal government interventions in local policing, such as the numerous “consent decrees” imposed on local police by the Obama administration’s Department of Justice.

He concluded with a discussion of defunding, or abolishing the police, saying incremental reform alone has not worked.

John Oliver lives in NYC with his wife Kate Norley, and their 2 small children. He makes 5 Million Dollars a year. As soon as they defund the police I am sure he will be ok when peopel go over to his house and loot

Defund police does not equal abolish the police. It means move some funding around so that police are not having to be mental health experts, marriage counselors, etc.

“All the while, as we were continuing to boost funding for police and give them more authority, we were simultaneously slashing spending on key social services,” Oliver said. “That meant that in many communities, the police were the only ones left to handle almost any issue that people had, which is a real problem … we are asking police to do far too much.

John Oliver explains ‘defund the police’ — and why it doesn’t mean ‘no police’

This is an issue of government encroachment on liberty and unions...but that is somehow "liberal".

Sorry, I thought you would not be offended when people play your own game. This British comedian is a liberal icon as much as the killer is an alt-right icon.

Yes, and not only that; in this video John Oliver exposed YET AGAIN what fraud those *corporate Democrats* are.
Specifically - Bill Clinton. ( At 9:17)
And overall as usual - lots of useful, well-researched information.

Nice slight of hand, change from conservative to alt-right. Why do that? Even with that dishonesty, your statement remains absurd.

Do you acknowledge elements of BLM are in fact calling to abolish the police? Ask the Minneapolis Major if in doubt.

Some people are calling for abolishment yes. But that is not what is meant by the defund calls.

It doesn’t make sense for conservatives to oppose that. They want to do the same thing to every other public organization with a strong union that makes it near impossible to get rid of bad employees.
