We've sure been trying "we" for a long time. Race seemed less of a factor until it reared up again when Obama was president, which is weird because, we elected a black president- twice. He couldn't have won without the support of white people.

If it were just about profits, why end slavery in the first place? One side, typically Northerners Radical Republicans who may never even met a black person, thought blacks were or could be interchangeable and compatible with whites but slavery was preventing that, the middle thought the black/white were not interchangeable and compatible but slavery was still wrong, slaveholders and their supporters typically Southerners and most familiar with blacks did not agree at all with the first group or about slavery with the middle ground and did have a profit motive. It wasn't the group with the clearest profit motive that won out but the Radical Republicans.

I guess you could argue the Radical Republicans had the strongest profit motive, but it's hard to see it.

Jim Crow had longer lasting effects of resentment, than any Democrat thought for the future.
Blame the Republicans.

The reason for that is this: Too much anger, too much resentment, alot of other socioeconomic issues, alot of vindictiveness, and people are out for themselves.

Republicans were complicit in Jim Crow too.

A good question is this: Why are we so divided?

To me it is just the natural outcome when you suddenly have so many people of widely disparate backgrounds thrust together in one place.

Birds of a feather flock together as they say...

We don't feel segregated. Our neighbors next door, across the street, and two doors down are all from India and are darker than African Americans. We are happy to have them, and in fact have become good friends with one of the families. Our city of 60,000 is now over 30% Asian, most from India, and there is no "Indian neighborhood" or "White neighborhood" here, we are very much intermingled.
