Do you think fake news is a thing? How do you discriminate when confronted with data, news, theory?

I try to always check the source for things like science, technology, govt policy, polls etc. I have more confidence in them when they are authored by people expert in the field, academic research, govt. administration that have a standing. I have 0 trust when it comes from corporations.

With media I trust newspapers and network news more than cable, and even then I seperate opinion from news and data. I read opinion columns but always check who they are, affiliation, politics and how these shape their opinions.

I trust Internet the least. Videos and photos can be manipulated. I trust discussions that take place on forums such as this more than Internet. Sure there is propogandists in these forums but there are also smart people who have some grip on facts.

What do you do when you meet people who relay opinions as news?

There is fake news every single day. It isn't even a question of believing or not believing that it exists. When I was a little kid, my friends and I would sometimes pool our money and buy the National Enquirer to read stories about space aliens and headlines like "Woman Gives Birth to Fish" Tabloids have been around for decades reporting crazy stories that a lot of people believe. An online site is only a difference form of spreading lies and some are a lot more dangerous.

I used to argue with them, but it's not worth the aggravation. I also lost friends, especially over the past 2 years, so it's best not to discuss controversial issues. I try not to socialize with conspiracy theorists, but there are people who repeat everything they read on certain websites without doing any research at all and the number is growing.

Yes, National Enquirer. But way fake news is disseminated now via the Internet has no resemblance to the tabloid. Many people only read that. We had, yes had, a friend who would so well you just read the mainstream media. And I will ask what else is there? What do YOU read and he will smile this mysterious smile. Gradually he became so strange we finally had to stop seeing him. And he is not ignorant, has a Ph D in mathematics from Harvard.

I don't know what the solution is but if a whole bunch of people are electing leaders based on fake news, it is pretty bad.

National Enquirer may be a rag (OK it's definitely a rag) but it was the ONLY media outlet that would touch the John Edwards extra marital affair story back during the 08 election. Think about that. A major candidate for the presidency - extra martial affair - cancer stricken wife - love child...........and the NE broke the story.

A whole bunch of MSM morons raised their hands and said "hands up don't shoot", in support for a movement and a story that was based on a lie. And they KNEW it was a lie. And they didn't CARE that it was a lie. And perpetuating that lie contributed to the destruction of cities, destruction of businesses, and the destruction of police lives.

If this election cycle has taught us anything, it has taught us that the MSM will (and do) lie about stories that push narratives they want pushed, conspire with those whose philosophy they agree with, downplay stories that don't fit their narrative, and bury stories they don't want you to see. They are willing pawns, co-conspirators, and useful idiots. Fake news stories? The Internet is full of them. And so is your newspaper. And so is your TV.

And Clinton crawled out from under the rock she's been hiding under just so she could commiserate about fake news and its destructive power against this nation?? Tell that to the CNN lackies you used to your own benefit during this election cycle. Or better yet, just go crawl back under your rock and stay there.

All news, except Wikipedia, is fake news. So the way to discriminate is don't believe anything you don't see unless it comes from Wikipedia.

"fake news" is disingenuous, the mainstream media has been in 'power' since the beginning of time, they were able to lie to your face and get away with it as you had no other option. Now, you have an option and they're letting you know that your new option is 'fake'.

Remember who started and is pushing this fake news narrative, its the democrats, its barack and hillary and their 'donors' its not trump or alex jones or anyone like that, the 'fake news' mantra is coming from a place of worry, and the reason to worry is because their lies are being exposed and they don't like that, so they're fighting back the only way they know how, and that's to treat you like a 'stupid person' and lie to your face and then try and convince you that real journalists on the internet are pushing fake news.

Today is Saturday, December 10th, and it is about 6 AM on the east coast. Here's today's leading fake news item:

President Obama ordered the intelligence community on Thursday to conduct a study of the alleged hacking of the election by person(s) or countries unknown. According to the Washington Post, the CIA studied the matter, formed an opinion, issued a secret report and leaked it to the paper on Friday that, and I quote:

"The CIA has concluded that Russia intervened in the 2016 election to help President-elect Donald Trump win the White House, and not just to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral system, the Washington Post reported on Friday.
Citing U.S. officials briefed on the matter, the Post said intelligence agencies had identified individuals with connections to the Russian government who provided thousands of hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee and others, including the chairman of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, to WikiLeaks...."

Source: CIA says Russia intervened to help Trump win White House: Washington Post | Reuters

Everyone who has ever lived in Washington knows the CIA hasn't been able to form an articulate opinion in 24 hours about anything since the Eisenhower administration. This is pure, pre-packaged, political propaganda ordered up by an outgoing president whose legacy, he fears, will be shredded by his successor.

Not the 'Woman Gives Birth to a Fish' genre of fake news, but fake news all the same.
