But let's test less.

Which ones of you Republicans support this?

America has done the most testing by far in total numbers, and is top 10 or so in tests per capita.

Who wants to go back to having high fever, coughing your head off and shortness of breath as requirements to get tested in order to have fewer tests?

We've done very poorly but still our deaths per capita are still far below Italy, Spain, France, UK, Belgium, and Sweden. Our problem is the Democrat run states have shot our deaths and infections up so high with the top 11 states in deaths per capita all run with Democrat Governors....if we had Republicans running those states, the USA death totals would be far lower.

If it weren't for the Democrat states, and specifically NY filling their assisted living homes with people infected with covid, we would look very good by comparison.

First the President said it was 'fake news' then it was just a 'democratic hoax'...then 'it would be like a miracle...it would just disappear'
Then he decided that the economy was more important than some people's lives...sigh

But what specific characteristic caused or contributed to the spike in cases and deaths?

As with the Legionnaires' disease scare of over forty years ago (linked to stagnant water) it might be a factor entirely un-linked to social issues.

I don't think that specific factor (or multiple factors) has been isolated or identified -- as yet.
