This thing with the Tom Petty song is a tough call. I had to put some thought into this.
I think the family should have a change of heart sometime in the future and allow trump to play the song but to place some restrictions on the places times of events where and when it is played. I think their family made their point. However the song is clearly about overcoming some adversity. It’s fitting for a trump campaign but it is also good to be cautious with the Tom Petty legacy.
Thus I do think that if trump still wants the song played that the Petty family should have a change of heart at one point, and allow it, with some stipulations. However,,, if the Petty family has an unAmerican ideology like what has infected the country then unfortunately I doubt trump would even want Toms song played.
I think that is how most truly excellent musicians like Tom might see it. He’d say yeah you can play it a few times but don’t over do it too much.
It has to do with Trump wanting to do whatever he wants and not have to ask permission from anyone. Nothing new here. This goes right along with how he operates. Nothing to do with the Petty family being unAmerican. Trump is the all supreme being, and doesnt want to be questioned by mere mortals.

I'll add another. This was originally written about 80's televangelism, but tweak the lyrics slightly and it could be describing a modern day Trump rally.
