So, to be clear, I'm a big supporter of trans rights and have created a thread defending and sticking up for Caitlyn Jenner against transphobic costumes mocking her for being trans (see: https://www.city-data.com/forum/curr...-internet.html).
But I had a conversation with a friend who got upset with me for saying that Bruce Jenner won Olympic Gold in 1976. He said "Caitlyn Jenner" won gold.
No. Just no. I fully support Bruce Jenner's transition to Caitlyn Jenner but this is getting insane now. Caitlyn Jenner is a creation of 2015, so it is nonsensical and insulting to our intelligence to push the notion that Caitlyn Jenner won an event from 40 years prior.
We can support trans rights, but also must speak the truth and stop trying to erase and rewrite history.
Bruce Jenner won, his name was Bruce then, this is in the history books and is a fact that cannot ever change. Bruce went on to change his name to Caitlyn years later.
It’s like when George Lucas went back and changed the face of Luke Skywalker’s dying father in “Return of the Jedi” to match the kid in the new movies. Some things are best left alone.

Bruce -- Caitlyn didn't come about until much later.
I know it's difficult for some of you to understand...that's on you...the rest of us get ig.

God in heaven, why couldn't someone stop Lucas post 1983?

I agree. Efforts to claim otherwise distort history. But I'm flabbergasted that this is even a topic of debate for some. It is an open and shut case from where I stand.

I do not like her, not even a little bit, but I would say Caitlyn Karkrashian won the gold medal. She was known as Bruce Jenner back then, but she changed her name. That said, isn't this kind of a silly thing to get into an argument about?
To my mind, it's like having an argument about whether the greatest boxer of all time was Cassius Clay or Muhammed Ali. Of course, we would say that Muhammed Ali was, because that was his name at the time of his passing.
