It’s an open secret that China employs a veritable army of internet commentators to sing the government’s praises and attack its critics, but researchers at Harvard University in the United States say they not only have evidence this is the case, but also what Beijing’s motive is. King’s team estimated the government posted about 488 million social media comments a year to deflect public criticism.

They are nicknamed the Wumao 50 Cent Army but they only make about 5 cents per post. They often use western names but you can sometimes spot them by their poor English. Remember that when you read negative comments about our President and government. The sad trolls probably dream about escaping to America.

Not to be confused with Media Matter's ShareBlue homegrown trolls. The ones on C-D will be insulted!

Didn’t the right argue that Russia played no influence in the 2016 election? That no ones mind could be changed via social media? Are Chinese just better trolls than Russians?

it was the fascist liberals who said that "Russian social media posts criticizing US, democrats and Hillary" influenced the election.....

so are you saying that the democrats are so easily influenced???

The right accurately argued that the Trump campaign didn't collude with Russia. Most of the right, also accurately I believe, argued that the social media efforts of Russia didn't impact the election outcome.

Who has argued that the Chinese are more effective? Isn't this just a story publicising what is happening in China in support of their Communist government? What is the link with Russia and the right?

The issue is who cares? If Russian trolling had no effect in 2016 why should we care about 2020? Ultimately the right has argued that Russian influenced played no part in 2016. So my question is why do they care about Chinese influence in 2920?

As long as you are in control of your faculties enough to be able to think and therefore vote, the source of information exposure is irrelevant because you are said to have the ability to take it in, parse it, and make a good decision about it (is it good or bad information). This is the core of voter free agency that underlies your right to vote.

Claiming that the source of information exposure is relevant implies that information exposure can legally remove your Voting Rights (your mind is contaminated with information from a de facto illegal source, and therefore your free agency is removed). An edict that can easily be used on anyone on either side of the isle.

Conversely, if the information source is irrelevant then so are complaints about so called "election interference" that are rooted in the simple presence of information from a particular source.

It's the most insidious anti-Free speech argument made in decades, and it attacks both one's ability to speak and one's ability to hear speech and at the same time maintain one's right to vote.

It also ignores the vast amount of propaganda that comes out of our corporate owned (much of it with foreign ties) media.

Americans should be smarter than to bargain away their currently inalienable rights because they feel entitled to win every election.

Especially over an issue that makes no logical sense in the context of a democracy and is therefore destined to be looked on poorly by history.

The Left must be ultra desperate to use a ploy like this: almost afraid that they won't win another election. I can't think of another plausible excuse for something this obviously moronic and anti-democratic.

But press on. It'll just serve as more historical evidence of the left's catastrophic decision making in this period. it'll serve to break down democracy until the vote is gone, less due to bad faith in the vote but more due to bad faith in the other party's willingness to accept the results without trying to destroy the system when they lose.

Chin'a motives for this social media interference go way beyond the 2020 election in scope. China's economy and world influence depend on exporting to the US. China is most concerned with public opinion in that they want Americans to continue being lemmings buying cheap Chinese products. The election is just a small short term blip on the proverbial radar screen. That is why the comparison of the motives of China to Russia is apples to oranges, not even remotely the same.
