Basically, I was out of control in my younger days. I am lucky that I stopped before I injured someone. I never could have lived with myself if that happened. I will not go to bars anymore if I have the car. I also drink early in the morning when I get off of work (I work graveyard shift) on work days. It really is not that hard. If I drink, the car stays home. The bus is way cheaper than a DUI, and it is FAR safer.

as for the fines, they arent enough. It ought to distroy you financially.... and I am being kind.
How about when police officers, state legislatures, judges, and lawyers get caught drinking and driving? Not driving drunk!

Driving is not a right. It is a privilege.

And, you do not have the right to abuse that privilege and consume alcohol and endanger others.

Another analogy might be - someone taking Prescription medication, taking it exactly as prescribed by their Doctor, being charged with, and subsequently convicted of, DUI.

It's not fun, trust me. I've had to do the scraping and family notifications. The offenders may not intend to cause the damage but the end result is still just as painful.

DUIs have harsh penalites because it's extremely dangerous to drive drunk. No one is getting rich of the fines; it costs more to put the people in jail and pay the prosecution to make the case stick. Find me a cop or judge who would rather have a DUI arrest instead of having the offender find a safe and legal way home. There isn't one.

To those that choose to drink and drive I say: MAKE THEM SUFFER!
Ok, so innocent people should be charged with DUI's because you are angry at DUI repeat offenders who cause fatal accidents? Is that what you're saying?

Here is the problem with what you are saying. A DUI already destroy's one life financially. Back when I got my first DUI in 2000, I was a delivery driver. I had my own apartment, and paid all my bills. Someone ran into my car, and I got a DUI. I wound up homeless because of it. Now, since I had no money, and could not survive, I had to take up stealing to survive. Luckily, I never got caught, but when you take away someone's livelihood because of a DUI, YOU might become a victim of it.

Then why not make drinking and driving against the law. I'm ok with that.

I promise you when drinking and driving is made totally illegal I will only drink in the privacy of my home, and I will not drink casually in restaurants, night clubs or strip clubs. Until then you're preaching to the choir.

How about YOU accepting personal responsibility.

If you drink, even a little, and it in any way impairs judgment or reactions, you can, and should be, charged with DUI. As I noted, medications are also something that may impair your ability to operate a motor vehicle. It you take meds that impair you in any way, you can, and should, "go to jail" over them.

If you think any comapny wants a person wirth a DUI driving their vehicle your crary. It would not just then effect the DUI drivers life but could endanger the livelihood of the entire small company and other workers.Basically you sound like your making excuse but you make a good argumant for tougher DUI laws and better enforcement.

Sorry, I don't have sympathy for alcoholics, as they have chosen to be that way. I feel damned sorry for your family though.
