Looking more like when the vaccine is released the cost could be lot higher then should be. I hope that isn't the case.

"Big Pharma"

"cost could be lot higher then should be"

How would you know what the cost should be?

These companies can spend hundreds of millions of dollars trying to develop a drug, and if it does not pan out, they eat the cost.
But when a drug is developed that helps people, they need to make a profit, otherwise they will go out of business.
Right now, you should be praying that the bad evil "big pharma" comes up with something that can help many people save their lives.

I’ll be participating in Moderna’s trial next month. Hopefully I’ll get the vaccine then. It’s a double blind study so I won’t know.

Not when they take public tax payer dollars to develop the drug, or vaccine. They make a profit when they sell billions of doses.

Herd immunity. In areas where it went through in March and April the infection rates continue to drop and remain low. And the death rates have bottomed out. 5 deaths in my county in the last 2 months. We've all gotten it and now have resistance to it. Will it last? I hope so but even the " experts" have no idea and still don't know much about this nasty but hardly world ending virus. Daeth rates continue to drop and are now believed to be like 1/4 of 1% with the majority of those being elderly or with other serious medical conditions and weakened immune systems.

>Lawmakers are expected to grill them about plans to develop and distribute the vaccines.<
Then allow big pharma to screw over the US population anyway. The grilling is largely fake. Congress works for their campaign funders. The US is not any form of democracy on monetary issues. They just allow freedom of speech because what the 99.99% think does NOT MATTER.

Consumers/patients might be a bit relieved to see how Gilead has been treating Remdesivir. When looked at with a bang for the buck viewpoint, it rates quite high. So the Rx may cost your HC insurance company a few thousand, it can easily save 10 thousand and more on a critical care hospital stay.

And then the Right should be proud, as they are selling most of the drug to the USA.

That is the exception, not the rule. This of course is a unique situation with a worldwide pandemic. So it makes sense for all governments to support any and all research to find an effective treatment, and/or vaccine.
It will cost pennies in comparison, if this drags on and causes a worldwide depression.

BTW - You may be unaware, but research and development of drugs to combat "superbugs" have ended by most, if not all large pharmaceutical companies. The reason is because they spend a billion+ dollars trying to bring a new effective drug to the market, and lose money on it because so few people use/need it, compared with other more profitable medicines.
So without government help, we may find that our antibiotics of last resort will become ineffective, and then we will be in real trouble.

This PBS documentary made back 7 years ago should frighten everyone. Especially pay attention to the part starting at about 33:00 where they start discussing my point about why few companies are even in the R&D to combat superbugs anymore;

https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/f...mare-bacteria/

With costs and risks so high, it is clear we as a nation (and even a species) should be funding R&D of medicine to combat something that could wipe us out if not controlled quickly.
Some of the best medical innovations and medications have come from capitalistic driven companies. However when they are demonized, sued out of existence, and must spend billions of dollars to try and develop non-profitable medicine, we need to help support them for a cause that benifits us all.
