In response to a question about the country's tourism sector, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said: "We will not have open borders for the rest of the world for a long time to come."

"Tourism is one of New Zealand's biggest industries, directly employing almost 10% of the country's workforce, and contributing almost 6% of GDP. Most visitors are from Australia, followed by China, the US, and the UK."

No Covid 19 in New Zealand now though which is great. Next focus will be on their economy in certain sectors...small baby steps.

I think not.

Name a single American who wouldn't take her to lead our Covid response over Trump. Meanwhile, Trump has run from Covid like he ran from Vietnam.

One of the most successful countries at handling this. In the top 3 on the conservative Heritage Foundation’s Economic Freedom index(US is #17). Yeah I would take that any day.

6% of their GDP at risk? They’re forecasting a 53% fall for us for Q2.
GDP is now projected to fall nearly 53% in the second quarter, according to a Fed gauge

Only as fast as normal arrives. Since Covid is out of the Prime Minister's control in other nations, I doubt very much that she willl lose her job for stopping Covid cold in New Zealand.

It's a small country and a proud one. The New Zealanders will help each other get by as best they all can until the tourists begin coming again.

There are other nations that are doing well at attacking Covid, so New Zealand won't have to wait forever for the tourists to show up. And since it will be one of few safe destinations, I expect there will be many brand-new tourists who will discover NZ for their first time.

I'm enjoying the lack of tourists -if anything, it's highlighted what a potential house of cards mass tourism has become.
