I have no problem with it. Although I’m of the opinion that it’s just a frigging flag (and the fixation on removing any references to less-than-wholesome parts of our history is a bit frightening), if they voted on it then so be it.
Just last week, an old friend who lives in Stonewall called.
He mentioned there was a growing possibility the state flag was going to change soon, and I asked him why, as I was doubtful it would.
He said the working folks in Mississippi have observed one new business after another come to the state, looking it over for a possible location for a factory, and then pass, only to move to S.Carolina or Alabama because of Mississippi's reputation as a racist hotbed.
Time after time, Mississippi has been considered seriously, and then passed up for another southern state. the working folks are sick of it.
A lot of those big corporations are foreign-owned or are from states that want to bring their industry back to our shores. The owners want no part of any racist mention in their products, but they see the south's great potential for industrial growth.
Mississippi is nowhere as intolerant or racist as it once was anymore. He has said that for many years.
While integration was forced upon them 50 years ago, the citizens have grown used to it now, and have accepted it long ago.
But the stain remains for as long as their state flag flies, he said, so changing the flag is necessary, and only the first step.
The citizens want the change as it will make the state look better to investors, just as the changes did with Alabama, S. Carolina, and Georgia.
My buddy is a pure quill redneck to the bone. He looks and sounds and acts so Mississippi he could play one in Hollywood and make a good living at it. But at the same time, he has never been a racist at all. None of his family have ever been racists either. None of our mutual friends are, either.
Despite appearances, he's one of the smartest persons I know. He might be a retired mechanic, but he sure knows which way the wind blows in his home state, so I take whatever he says as the truth.

There is a difference between being a reference to a less-than-wholesome part of our history vs being something that honors/reveres the evil part of of our history. The purpose of the Mississippi flag, and most of the confederacy statues for that matter, is to honor, not to reference or educate.
Symbols from a defeated nation have no place on 'Muricas public property.
The Confederate flag is no place in American society, period.
