I'm not lying. I'm living in the south, and watching people my father and grandfather's age throughout history.
The racists who used the N word and were against Civil Rights died Republicans, although they were yella dog democrats all their lives until the end of the Civil Rights Movement. And some took longer to leave the democrat party, but they eventually did, and joined their kindred in the Republican party.
I've watched them. I watched them hang their heads, especially during the Carter administration, and lament "The Democratic party isn't ours anymore. Where did our party go?" (To the right wing is where, they soon realized, and ran to catch up and join them).
The Democrat Party does not need to change its name, but they do need to abandon a few terrible policies that they adopted in the last two decades that have lost them many voters, such as their support for illegal immigration, focusing too often on fringe issues (like LGBTQ) while ignoring workers & union members who lost factory jobs in the mid-west, and becoming more war-hawkish (why did we bomb Libya?). The modern Democrat Party has changed for the worse, most registered Democrats and non-Democrats can at least agree upon that.
Worse than slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow laws that the democrats used to support?
Given that the Democratic Party was the party of slavery, the KKK, and Jim Crow, should the name of the party be changed to assuage the suffering of modern blacks?

The party you describe from a century ago has changed.
