They aren't worried about the election or what people think. They will try to get as much mail fraud... oops - I mean mail in voting as possible. Which means they need a crisis in order to have a reason to keep people home.

Exhausting.

If Trump wins re-election and the Senate is lost, he's toast anyway. They'll impeach him AND remove him from office.

If he is re-elected and the Senate holds Republican, same result as last time. No removal of office, only impeachment, most likely.

If Biden is elected, COVID, the violent protests and rioting all quiet down. The Republicans better hope they hold the Senate in this scenario, however, because it'll be clear sailing for the Democrats if not. Gotta have some checks and balances at least.
