And who travels on I-90? Which major cities are within a day's drive? It is indeed a lovely monument, in a serenely beautiful location. But the logistical difficulties of visiting, are considerable.
I was there, for the first time, last year. Though I am not impressed by patriotic bromides, the sculpture - as art, and as engineering achievement - is awesome.
I'm no fan of presidential pomp or pretense. Even so, it is the nature of politicians to hold flamboyant and extravagant shows, in public places; let them. Presumably the fireworks-professionals know about fire-safety etc. Assuming that professionals are hired, the environmental impact should be benign. And if such functions bring joy to the plurality of the public, then let's not deny them such joy.
I-90 North and I-90 South are the two major northern routes from the Midwest to the Northwest. All the traffic from Chicago to Seattle flows through both of them.
The logistics are not considerable at all. Any one who's planning a trip out west can stop if they're on I-90 South.
How much trouble did you have getting there? Was the 4-lane up to the monument clogged with traffic or something?
They are very heavily travelled all year, but especially in the summer, as one of the other take folks to Yellowstone, Glacier, and all the other national parks in the West.
Mt. Rushmore is closest to Rapid City. A turnoff there takes you straight to the monument. Rapid City's Chamber of Commerce cooked the idea of it up as a way to stop tourist traffic back in the 1930s. When the C of C ran out of money, the federal govt. took it over.
Kids sent in their dimes from all over the country to pay for its completion.
“The radical view of American history is a web of lies. All perspective is removed. Every virtue is obscured. Every motive is twisted. Every fact is distorted and every flaw is magnified until the history is purged & the record is disfigured beyond recognition”
Oh yeah, you really got me I don't remember Obama doing a photo op during a global pandemic. If you can find one then please post it.
