A direct descendant of Thomas Jefferson has called for the memorial to the third president to be removed from Washington, D.C.
Writing in the New York Times Monday morning, Lucian K. Truscott IV says his ancestor’s former estate at Monticello is enough of a tribute and that the Jefferson Memorial, located next to the Tidal Basin in the nation’s capital, should be replaced with a statue honoring the abolitionist hero Harriet Tubman.
So we should honor a person who recruited people for a terrorist attack lead by a madman on the federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry intended to arm slaves to murder men, women and children. Right.
Excerpt: From Thomas Jefferson's own family, a call to take down his memorial
Response: seems that fingers are pointing at them for reparations. Maybe pick up the tab for 600 black folks living in Monticello....
The statue is owned by the People not this guy.
If he really feels that strongly about it why doesn't he start writing out some reparations checks. How much should each descendant of a slave get? $1000, $10,000, $100,000. Is there any amount that would end their oppression??
After reading this - I have no wonder why he feels that way - but that doesn't mean the rest of the family does. He was a journalist for the Village Voice another left wing rag.
I always wondered why John Adams didn't have a memorial. If there had been one person that we could call the founding father it would have been Adams.
Oh and he owned no slaves.
Took too long before people tried to build it. Actually it was proposed by legislation in 2001 but they couldn't get enough funding. Proposal is still alive.
He wasn't a particularly popular president, unlike Washington and Jefferson.
Several memorials in Massachusetts.
