Just the other day I saw an article in a Colorado paper saying that a study showed that the protests may have even slowed the spread of COVID because it made a bunch of people stay home. That was infuriating.

Partying on Memorial Day is undoubtedly a contributing factor. As were the protests.
I heard many talking heads saying that the risk during the protest was "worth it", in their opinion. That's not the same as saying there is no risk, however.
Again, every time I saw the protests covered on TV, COVID-19 worries were mentioned. Every time.
Maybe you should choose better news sources? I don't know.
