Trump endangered the elderly by ignoring the first wave. He endangered working age persons when he pushed to re-open businesses. Now he's in the process of endangering children by trying to re-open schools. At least he's equal opportunity in which US citizens he harms. Keeping Americans safe is the farthest thing from his mind, and somehow people still buy into his BS.
He didn't manage to kill enough Grandmas, so now he is trying to turn their grandchildren into an army of disease carriers.
What matters most is serious and hospitalizable cases. ICU cases and then deaths. Not absolute numbers of positives or total cases. Although those numbers can certainly be useful as near future predictors.
So call your area hospitals and see how busy the ER's, and ICU's are. That will tell you whether your area is seriously under viral siege. All areas can be very different as the virus dictates very different case loads in different areas over time.
Covid hospitalizations: 1500 around Memorial day; more than 10k as of yesterday
Positive test rate: about 5% around Memorial day, 15% at present
Deaths per day (7 day average): 25 around Memorial Day, 76 as of yesterday
