What gives? Am I missing something here or is there a complete lack of common sense amongst those singing the praises of this new Cancel Culture in the US? Ulysses S. Grant statue destroyed? Calls for Hamilton boycott? And what is wrong with the national anthem? It's author's statue was also toppled.
Can someone please explain to me how any of this makes sense?

Francis Scott Key isn't the greatest of characters - - and really, there are songs that would be better as our National Anthem (take the biographies out of the equation).
I don't get the Grant one and I haven't really followed the Hamilton one.

Shrug. Its about people saying they will spend their money on companies that do not donate money to politicians or causes that they find abhorrent. So for example if you feel that LGBTQ folks should be treated the same as others, you often find that you do not want to eat at chik fila because of the donations by the company to anti-LGBTQ causes.
The Hamilton boycott by Trump supporters is similar, they boycotted Hamilton after the cast confronted Pence. Which was hilarious as even Pence said that that sort of thing is basically Democracy in action. They did not want their money to support people who might confront Pence like that.
Bottom line for businesses? Keep your politics out of your business. Dont be dumb. Your customers get to decide how they spend their money, and if you use the money you get to support things they find horrible, dont be surprised if they spend it elsewhere.
LOL. Apparently you missed the Hamilton one that the OP mentioned, and that I also discussed. That was right wingers. Starbucks ring any bells?
Its not the left abusing folks. Its people deciding how they want their money spent, and companies reacting to that.
i saw the Hamilton thing. I saw your post before I posted it.
sure that happened and it is an outcropping of the EXCLUSIVELY LEFTIST cancel culture. If some handful of conservatives react with similar anti-American idiocy, that doesnt change the fact that Cancel Culture is of, by and for progressivism.

I take much greater exception to the fact that they tore down Frederick Douglass. Black Lives Matter and Antifa tore down Frederick Douglass. The man who "stole himself" from slavery and proved to anyone who doubted that blacks were just as intelligent and capable as whites -- striking down one of the excuses for slavery. The man who urged the United States to live up to its own founding principles by making it's freedoms and privileges available to all people. And BLM ripped his statue down. They quite literally have no shame nor limits to their insanity.
The best historical parallel to the current insanity is the Cultural Revolution of China. A bunch of ideological brainwashed young people went on rampage all over China, destroying anything and everything that they deemed contrary to the Communist utopian ideal vision. Countless historical treasures were destroyed. Buddhism is to China what Christianity is to the United States. It's been the dominant religion there for millennia. Buddhism was crushed, ridiculed and persecuted everywhere. Its shrines and temples destroyed. Any statue, work of art or shrine that wasn't Socialist enough, was destroyed. The recorded ancestry of hundreds of millions of Chinese was destroyed and lost forever. Millions were brutally murdered, raped, tortured. There was even a case of mass cannibalism. The truly striking thing is that the current rampage seems to be targeting the same "four olds": Old customs, old culture, old habits, and old ideas. China's version of this thing had the blessing of Mao Zedong, so it was given free reign.
Here in the United States, we do have a Constitution forbidding many of the atrocities that these Communist Terrorists really really want to do. The Constitution has been routinely ignored in far too many cases. Police are turning into the enforcers for the BLM and Antifa side far too often. But the Constitution and rule of law does prevent them from going too far with things generally.
