Interesting article on Camden, NJ - I grew up not far from there. It *was* a pit, cops, and violence, were everywhere. Seven years ago, they fired the entire police force. Cleaned house from top to bottom. And replaced it with a new one with more emphasis on communication and community relationships and less emphasis on threats, beating, choking and shooting people.

It seems to have worked out. Violent crime is down 42%, and people in the community feel safer, both from the thugs, and the police. If *this* is what people are talking about when they say "defund the police", is kicking out the entrenched players who resist positive change, and hiring in new people who will respect and try to serve the community, rather than intimidate it, it may be worth a try.

Except "defund" implies permanent state of no funds to hire new people.

I agree that if people want to actually just abolish police, that's a terrible idea. We can't do without law enforcement.

Some corrupt police departments need a thorough house cleaning. Seems to have worked in Camden. But this idea of "defunding the police" sounds nuts to me.

They replaced their police force and changed their way of doing things. But there is still a police force.

But your post does prove that there are improvements to be made.

It isn't and it isn't. Even if there is no PD, there is always the SD (Sheriff's Department)..

And most of the fired cops applied and got their job back in the new department. And they increased police numbers over all. Not at all like the defund the police calls going on at the moment.

You know it's suspect when an article like this doesn't mention the murder rate. The lower crime rate could just be a change in reporting or record-keeping.

This is interesting.......
Are the remaining 58% of crimes committed being addressed by other neighboring police departments?
Is there data that spells out how safe or unsafe the residents have felt since the inception of this policy.
