The explanation for the pattern of American infections lies in something of central importance to the spread of a virus: geometric progression, such as 1, 2, 4, 8, 16. If one person infects two, two infect four and so on. Unless the rate of infection is driven down by reducing contacts, any geometric increase quickly balloons: 256, 512, 1,024.

Another explanation is that the starting point matters. If you begin a geometric progression at one, the tenth in the sequence is 512. If you begin at three, the tenth iteration is 1,536. American states began easing lockdowns, as it were, at three: their caseloads were three or more times higher than in Europe, in part, argues Jarbas Barbosa of the Pan-American Health Organisation, because most states never had full lockdowns.

If we all were a little more patient.....hold off that haircut and the urge to eat at Denny’s for one more month, we would of been in a far better position today.

Nope! We opened with face masks and social distancing in place. Unless of course we were lied to that those things don't actually work which wouldn't be a surprise to me.

Yes, we opened too soon...lack of mask wearing, testing with quick results and minimal contact tracing making it much worse...Taiwan, New Zealand, and South Korea did it right though...hope we can too at some point...

The point of the article is we didn’t get the infection numbers low enough to a manageable rate, like other countries.

No. Young people have gotten tired of being lied to. They are bored and frustrated. And they are ignoring all rules. If it isn't at a bar, its at a beach or lakehouse or protest.

The big spikes were a week or two after Memorial Day and the protests.

Too bad there were so many who didn't follow mask wearing and social distancing. Certain followers of an out of touch president seemed to do just that. Thus, where social distancing and masks helped immensely to stem the spread in other countries around the world, our very special MAGAs prevented that from happening here.

Thus, the current state of affairs. Look around the rest of the world if you don't believe me. They are opening without the threat of recurring spread, unlike here.

Taiwan, New Zealand, South Korea and Japan are islands or peninsulas that can totally isolate.

Not relevant.

When we opened we were mandated to wear a mask and practice social distancing so I'm not understanding what this topic is about. We had a very limited opening anyway.

Protests were not big spreaders in a number of states. Minnesota didn't see initial increases, nor did New York state. Arizona only had a number in Phoenix and a handful of riots. Most states largely just did reopen too fast including bars, restaurants, and waterways. The young people were not tired of being lied to but rather just that they wanted to get out. My dear sister didn't believe her husband (my blood brother) that you get stir-crazy until the lockdown. Now she believes him. Hell, Trump's rally caused a spike in Oklahoma cases.

I don' t think "too early," just not regulated enough. When people congregate at a beach party, pool party, bar, protest, you name it. This is how it spreads.
