No one said it was self-defense or that it was justified. However, the perp didn’t chase the victim. The victim vandalized his vehicle while he was in it. He got out and punched him.

And to be honest, that white guy was being an obnoxious drunk. I really doubt that coach had the intention of killing anyone.
Who does that with a punch anyways? Seeing as how this coach live in a liberal college town, he probably have to deal with arsehoals all the time, and lost his cool.

You make it sound like it's just one person banging on the window. Was your reference just about one person banging on a car window, that was it? People in their cars get that all the time from the windshield washer dudes on the street.

I advocate defending yourself against people behaving in a threatening manner towards you or your property. If you did it I would support you for it. You have a right to drive dow the road without having a mob of thugs attacking you or your property.
The sentence is a state law which determines a 1 punch death as a 3rd degree assault- a misdemeanor, unless there is proof the punch was an intent to kill. The jury found Jones guilty of misdemeanor. Nothing to do with the judge or race.
Jones Got out and punched Szabo and left. Szabo’s head hit the pavement causing brain injury.
Jones had no arrest record and does not drink. He had no idea Szabo was seriously injured, let alone died.
Neither Szabo or Jones are from NY.
Elsewhere under similar circumstances, Jones might have shot Szabo claiming he felt threatened and was defending his property and not faced any charges.
Conversely, Jones could have chosen to call 911 and reported drunk guy damaging property.
Regardless, the Actual outcome has nothing to do with the judge or race.
this right here is the key sentence. The decedent was out of control and his actions caused another person to react in a way to stop the threat. The defendant could have just driven away but is that the law in New York? The defendant was a basketball coach at some point but was he some type of trained boxer that knew he could knock someone out with a single punch? Misdemeanor conviction is completely fine here. What I take issue with is that everyone here knows that if the skin color of the individuals were reversed this would be spun as a hate crime and the decedents behavior just prior to their death would be disregarded and minimized.
