The players are propped up bcuz American society basically wants there to be a venue for pro female athletes, even if it's not profitable or popular. Very similar to the ungrateful, anti American, Women's Soccer Team who is supposed to representing the entire country, not just the PC, Woke, SJW idiots. Women's sports is an inferior product. That it is why they often are unsuccessful and need to be subsidized.
