The liberals are upset that the truth is leaking out.
They also want to protect rioters from consequences of their crimes.
They are trying to keep the left from looking bad. They have been pushing the "peaceful protest" lie for so long they are desperate to cover up the truth.
The ACLU are a bunch of flaming idiots that protect violent thugs and stamp on the rights of the victims.
Well, that is their purpose. This is America, so, somebody has to defend them. The constitution protects all of us, even some really horrible people. To say that horrible people don't have rights, is a very slippery slope, because who decides what constitutes a "horrible person"? If you allow them to take away the rights of a horrible person today, then tomorrow, you may find yourself deemed "a horrible person" and your rights will be taken away.
There was a time when they actually believed in Civil Liberties. They supported the Neo-Nazis marching in heavily Jewish Skokie, IL. That was a principled stand, supporting the rights of one of the most obnoxious groups.
I always thought the town went about it the wrong way. They shouldn't have tried to stop those low-life, pieces of garbage from marching. That gave them a spotlight. That is the only reason we know about this incident decades later.
Instead, they should have decided as a town to just stay home that day. Close all stores, restaurants, and gas stations, and everybody just takes the day off and avoids going into town for any reason.
If I was one of those police officers I would record every second of every day I had to be out there. Eff the protesters. Do they want body cams or not?

The ACLU has always been, and still is a real mixed bag. They do indeed provide support to the unpopular and even loathsome views (such as legally defending NAMBLA after two of their pedo members raped and murdered a 12 year old boy), and once in a while they get it right.
But they are not a non partisan org, and never have been, so the people that support the ACLU 100% need to at least admit that.
The ACLU openly supports racial preferences in society, and openly ignores the 2nd amendment, as they state they disagree with it.
They also get real soft on religion, (other than christianity), in particular islam.
