Libertarians are for a very small government. On most issues they are more like Republicans. However, they differ with Republicans in favor of legalizing drugs and even prostitution and they oppose almost all US military intervention in other countries.
Republicans are the more conservative party. They support lower tax rates and support less regulations on business. They mostly oppose abortion as a right. They support spending a higher amount on the military.
Democrats are the more liberal party. They support a higher tax rates, especially on the wealthy and support more regulation of business. They strongly support labor unions. They also support more environmental regulations. They support abortion as a right.
Being French, you must understand that liberal and conservative are not quite the same thing in Europe as they are in the US.

It looks like there is no difference between the European (democratic) socialists and American democrats?

Democrats are closest to the Social Democrats in alot of European countries. In other countries they'd be closer to the most right or centrist elements of the Labour party. The left-most Democrats in the US would still be to the right relative to the most liberal/left members of the British Labour party.
On the whole, American politics is more to the right than Europe, and it's more defined by social issues than by economic issues. In terms of economic policy, the Republicans and Democrts differ much less (Bill Clinton especially moved the Democrat part very close to Republicans on economic issues), but on social policies they are very different. This may change this year, as economic issues are playing a much bigger role in the campaign, and I believe the whole country is starting to shift leftward economicly and socially.
The largest, most dependable block of Republican voters have been extremely religious people who believe that people that do not share their beliefs and worldview are corrupting society, and they reject many aspects of modernity such as pluralism, ambiguity, doubt, relativism, and so forth. It might be argued they also consider science to be not very important in their lives, and they find beliefs more comforting explanations for the world. These people are known as the "Religious Right", and are uniquely American (they don't really exist in Europe). They look on the Democrats as being godless and immoral. Democrats on the other hand see the Republican base as ignorant reactionaries, people who want to live in the past and deny many people their rights and freedoms. This is starting to change, however, as many religious people realize that Republicans have not fullfilled their promises to establish the "city on the hill" and wipe out modernity and all the ills they see in modern society; this election I expect alot of the Religious Right to be disillusioned and unenthusiastic, especially about John McCain's Republican candidacy, who has always been villified by the religious right leaders as not being "conservative" enough.
Republicans - God's favorite party. He endorses everything they do. Republicans don't like to pay taxes for social programs, because taxes should be used to fund wars instead. Republicans think domestic spying is a good idea because that's small government.
Democrats - God doesn't like this party. He is always angry with Democrats. They are afraid to challenge Republicans, it may cause Joe Sixpack to believe Democrats are pro-terrorist closet commies and want to model America to Soviet doctrines. Meanwhile, the Democrats have decided to take a nap and don't want to be disturbed. Every once in a while a Democrat will utter a peep or two.
Libertarians - Second Amendment.

I love it.
