you'd get as many definitions as there are people but in general

- libertarians believe in individual rights and a decentralized federal government. they don't like the tax code and are often upset with the modern trend of putting the power of government in the legal system (legislation through litigation). they also tend to be on the isolationist side, if given a black and white choice in foriegn policy. i think the problem is that the choices are no longer black and white, due to the global market. for example, fighting a cold war with the USSR would have been much easier for a libertarian to endorse since it was one big enemy, but now, most of them I talk with don't endorse our foriegn policy (they call it world police or something)

- republicans, in general, are at least socially conservative, but in my view the party has lost the fiscal conservative credentials. in an ideal world, conservatives and libertarians share many views, but will disagree on social issues. I can't think of a modern republican president who was a fiscal and social conservative in both word and deed. There is a noticable rise in republicans who are not textbook social conservatives, but they often flex to carry the social conservative block. foriegn policy is another hot topic among conservatives who want to identify with the republican party. there's a growing bunch who's not willing to stick it all on the line for Isreal (just one example), but they're still in the minority

the whole system is going to continue to result in 51/49 elections with lots of banter -- that's funny because the candidate choices seem to be getting more and more similar (example, McCain and Clinton)

Libertarians want the country to be as the founding fathers intended. A free country, where people can live with minimum goverment interference.
Republicans and Democrats are actually on the same side and want a corporate owned country where the rich make slaves of the poor.

Conservative and Liberal is different than libertarian

Conservatism is about small government and capitalism, liberalism is about big government and communism.

Libertarian is people should keep their freedoms, while authoritarian is about the state having all of the power. (Dictatorship vs pure democracy)

US Primaries 2008
Generally Conservatism goes hand in hand with authoritarian, and the opposite for liberalism.

The 'right' also means conservative, which is generally republican. The 'left' is liberal which is generally democrats. Blue generally stands for democrat, while red stands for conservative. Thats why during news programs that talk about elections, they refer to them as blue or red states, which is how they usually vote in an election.

Cities are usually vote democratic while rural votes republican.

Conservatism, Liberalism... Libertarian, Authoritarian... they are all positions on subjects, while Democrat and Republican are the parties/organizations with which the people join.

Republicans generally believe in smaller government.Democrats believe generally in biggwer governmant.Libertians really depends on the candidate but genrlly they believe in more staes rights and isolationism. Then their can be bluedog democrats that are more conservative than liberal democrats. The there are the ultra conservative republicans that are more conservative than the middle of the road republicans. This year it sees to be two liveral democrats and a moderate republican running.

Libertarians are mostly Republican voting. True libertarians do not believe in democracy; they believe the governments primary job is defend property rights of individuals. True libertarians are very rare in the US. Libertarianism is closer to what you would call in Europe Anarchism, though most Libertarians in the US are on the Right whereas most Anarchists in Europe were on the Left.

Conservatives vote mostly Republican. Conservatives are primarily two groups. Fiscal conservatives who believe that the government should allow businesses more freedom to do as they want without interference. And social conservatives, that support "traditional religious values" such as creationism (Adam and Eve) in place of science in schools, and are oppossed to abortion and gay rights. Most Republicans are Conservatives. The (stereo)typical Republican is white, male or female, and lives in rural or suburban areas, typicly having modest education and working in their own small business or doing low-to-medium skill work.

Democrats are a much more broadly defined political party than Republicans- traditionally they were a majority party throughout most of the US history. There are some Conservative Democrats, but most are moderate or centrist or liberals (political left). The typical Democrat are, as examples; women, minorities (Blacks, Hispanics), people living in cities or suburbs close to cities, gay and lesbians, and post-graduate educated individuals working professional and educational careers. Democrats tend to not own their own businesses as much as Republicans, and they either make slightly less-than-average incomes or make much more than average.
