The Walk Away Campaign organized the event to “show the radical left that they do not own America’s streets and that our country is filled with kind, loving, big-hearted Americans of every race, religion, background, and creed,” its website read.
If you're convinced that mandatory enforcement of mask rules retards the spread of COVID, you're entitled to your opinion like everybody else. And FWIW, the "Korporate" world (Seig Hiel!) is probably your strongest ally. (As for myself, I don't have too much of a problem with masks per se either).
But the point is, with the exception of the Spanish influenza of a century ago, this is the first time modern technology has locked horns with a pandemic. And we are far too deep in uncharted territory to immediately separate what might work from what doesn't.
And the fact remains that a tradition of questioning all authority remains central to the American character; and the "holier-than-thou" attitude displayed by the "progressives" and self-appointed signalers of virtue probably alienates more people than it wins over.
Despite the hand-wringing by the self-righteous few, some of whom actually appear to be rooting for a "third wave" already, this pandemic will probably run its course and burn itself out. I can't recall the name of the man of medicine who observed that "A small percentage of illness is invariably fatal, and most of the rest is self-limiting, which doesn't leave us with that many options".
Given a choice between taking my chances with COVID and seeing my nation abandon a four-centuries-old tradition of rebellion and skepticism due to the squeals of a collection of nanny-staters and their snowflake offspring -- I will proudly opt for the former.
