COVID was the straw that broke the camels back. For years NYC has been hit with over-regulation, astronomical rents, astronomical taxes, very difficult to run a business, high tolls, streets are now pedestrian villages. Then lockdowns happened and people realized to heck with this and left and are still leaving. The North NJ housing market is booming. I expect this to last for perhaps one more year before the housing market in NY/NJ crashes
It wasn't Covid that was the straw. It was the riots and looting. Don't kid yourself. The Chicago real estate market was dead as a doornail until Memorial Day weekend. Now the suburbs are hot because people are leaving the city.
No longer desirable. My Nephew is going to university in NYC and rented an apartment in Manhattan recently about 1/3 of what it was a year ago.
where? My born on the UWS gs is looking. The ones he sees are only down from 2000 to 1700.
And my daughter tells me people are buying 2nd homes just up the road, keeping their Manhattan apartments. while the kids are home and people working from home, they need a yard and a little more space. They are all still based in NYC.

I believe the youtube vloggers and the earth cams which I've been following for weeks. At this time the streets would be shoulder to shoulder and traffic at a stand still - as you can see - there are few people out and about and traffic is running much better than any other city traffic I know.
A number of sources I listen to have been saying it for weeks. The moving companies in New York City are overwhelmed with all the demand from everyone wanting to get the hell out of Dodge. Bill DeBlasio will go down in history as the Mayor of New York City that turned it into Detroit 2.0.
Congress should pass a law that says if you voted Democrat in the past two election cycles, you are not allowed to move out of the dump you're trying to flee.
