There was a study done on breast cancer that showed a rise in death rates among black women. It also found that during this same period better testing could be done with new machines. These machines were expensive and hospitals in the black communities couldn't afford them. White women just got better access to new technology. Its the same thing through out American society. Nobody who gets sick wants to be taken to the hospital on the black side of town.

Not wholly true, just a generality.

With our 1/1/17 highway head on crash I insisted on the public hospital in Vegas for my wife with 36 injuries, 4 potentially lethal. As a doc I had a bit of inside knowledge to draw on.

Besides socioeconomic and cultural reasons, there maybe genetic as well. Some populations have more natural immunity to various coronaviruses than others - and that includes our new friend SARS-CoV-2. Just because its a 'new' virus, doesn't mean your body won't recognize it as a threat. Some studies indicate as much as 50% of blood samples taken from patients in 2015-2018 had immunity to the virus. I bet if we broke it into races, people from the asian and european continents will be more represented in that group.

These are the stats for my state of Kentucky for comparison -
Confirmed Cases:
  • White - 79.50%
  • Black or African American - 12.30%
  • Multiracial - 5.58%
  • Asian - 2.05%
  • Native American - 0.43%
  • Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific - 0.15%
Deaths:
  • White - 81.83%
  • Black or African American - 14.18%
  • Multiracial - 2.58%
  • Asian - 1.42%
  • Native American - none
  • Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific - none
State Population:
  • White: 87.08%
  • Black or African American: 7.98%
  • Two or more races: 2.25%
  • Asian: 1.41%
  • Other race: 0.99%
  • Native American: 0.22%
  • Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander: 0.06%
There is something genetic about this virus that makes some people more susceptible, and it seems to disproportionately impact Blacks. It is true in my own family. As I have mentioned multiple times, this virus has hit my family hard. Very hard. The white people who have married into the family have either not gotten it or have had it so mildly that it wasn’t even noticeable. Most, though, have been tested while there were family members living in the same house who were hospitalized, and still came up with negatives. What is more, none of their bi-racial kids have gotten it either, at least as far as we know.

I find the Asian, and genetically related Native American/Hawaiian/PI, death rate to case comparison particularly interesting. Just saying.
