Its a failure in our educational system.
We have govt science and govt education, which then further distills down to D science and education vs R science and education.
So long as people want the govt involved, so it will be.

Well let's have a look at your list here.

1. COVID-19 Have you read much about COVID? How many scientists don't agree on how it spreads? How deadly it is? These so called scientific leaders can't seem to agree on much. Then there is the economy to understand! If the economy gets very bad, who is going to feel that the most? The poorest of us all will feel it the most!!!!! There are so many variables, involved. Lets get real shall we.

2. Climate change There has been ice ages and hot decades throughout the earth's history not caused by man at all. There are scientists that agree with some of things and don't. Most all agree humans are helping the warming trend, but how much do human's contribute. Ask that to the world scientists that are leading in that study? Also, a warming earth might not be as horrible as the leftist want everyone to think. It might actually have benefits on some fronts. Oh, you don't want to mention that though! Of course not!

3. Evolution Obviously ALL creatures evolve, but we are still discovering the so called "first man" thing. We are clueless really about our history. It is almost all theory due to new discoveries. Most everyone knows we evolve. Humans have even evolved in the past 5 generations in a physical sense.

Anyway, you agenda push seems flimsy at best. We all know what you are pushing.

Because the issue has been framed in the most simplistic of terms. "Anti-science." Science isn't one thing. Scientists don't agree on everything. Science is a human enterprise and is dynamic and evolving. In fact, people are supposed to try to disprove others and have healthy disagreements. Sure, there is a consensus, but not a monolith. The assumption that you can't disagree with 'the science' is naive. What people really mean, is you can't disagree with what the establishment says the science is. And the establishment often consists of the media, tech CEOs and politicians. I've seen many credentialed scientists from top research universities silenced because they don't hold the party line, especially regarding Covid. And to presume there is a solid consensus on a NEW disease is preposterous.

The problem is the pre-supposition of a monolith, and the shutting down of free thought and debate. When that happens, it is very destabilizing, and gives rise to conspiracy theories and fringe beliefs. Because dissent goes underground where it can't be vetted by the usual open discourse in the clear light of day.

We see it with COVID-19, climate change, and even still controversy over how old the Earth is and Evolution. You see a growing movement against the fact-checking websites. The places/people designed to provide factual information are themselves getting gone after.

It is easy to say it is because of our main-line Protestant upbringing, but there is plenty of anti-science from even the more non-religious crowds as well.

Is it a symptom of how divided we have become where everything has to be assigned a political slant before it is viewed like teachers, police, businessmen and women have? Or is it something deeper in our history?
It is more than just Covid-19, Climate Change, and evolution.

You see lots of people denying science on:

-That Intelligence is largely genetic

-The strong correlation between the SAT and student grades in college, graduation rates in college, IQ tests, and career performance

-Genetically modified foods

-Vaccines

-Astrology

-Ghosts

-The long-term ineffectiveness of Head Start

-Nuclear Energy

Etc..

Default Why the Anti-Science/Anti-Fact movement in the US?

I think a major part of the reason is the loss of trust in the government and especially of the lost of trust in the media. People seem to put more faith what their friends are saying on facebook or youtube.

Trust in the government probably rose with FDR, WW2, Truman and Eishenhower. But Johnson, the Vietnam War, Nixon and Watergate pretty much demolished it. It has never been the same since.

But people should have a healthy dose of skepticism toward politicians anyway. The real problem IMHO is the media. Far too many of them seem to have become outright propagandists rather than reporters of the news. If you don't trust the journalist to be impartial and fair, then it becomes easier to dismiss their reporting in the future entirely.

This, exactly. Everything is so politically motivated, from the research and studies, to the reporting of the findings.

If "the science" supports political agenda A, team B is skeptical and team A calls them science deniers.

Tough to know what's true when everyone is fighting for political power.
