In a unanimous vote, the Austin City Council moved Thursday to cut about one-third of next year’s $434 million police budget amid national calls for “defunding” law enforcement agencies in favor of spending more money on social services.

How is it that a Red state like Texas has a city which is defunding their police department? GOP is losing it's grip on the state.

It's Austin.... San Francisco on the 3rd coast.
Steve Adler is a full blown Communist, as is the DA.
Travis County government is just as bad. The Sheriff is a Illegal Alien Sanctuary Lover.
These people are elected over & over again.
I just make sure I'm armed, because self control & picking your battles wisely, is a rare thing around here.

Austin is liberal; the rest of Texas isn't. Austin is also as loony as it gets and it's gotten worse since the California leftists have moved in. As it usually happens, the cretins from the left coast turn everywhere they go into the cesspool they just ran away from.

When I lived in Austin, it was a boring, safe town. I have a feeling that's about to change....and it's what they deserve.

Why do they create a false choice: either fund the police force, OR fund social services? How about FUND the police force FULLY, and take funding from somewhere else for social service programs. Or find an alternative solution to generate funding for social programs, like a private/public partnership. Billionaires, pro athletes, BLM, celebrities---time to chip in!

I'm sure if someone went through the Austin budget with a fine tooth comb, they could make some cuts. Just a quick google search found some city manager making 300k... most city budgets are filled with lots of waste and inefficiency.

This isn't about increasing social service programs. It's part of a broader agenda that seeks to have fewer people in jail, fewer people arrested...and the general normalization of criminality. Pretty soon the only crimes that rate a real response will be rape or murder, and they will no doubt chip away at those too. Anything else---you're on your own. They've already started to minimize property crime. Why are people falling for this?

Isn't Austin a high tech city says on Wikipedia GDP of $90 billion that lot for a city of it's size. Why would you bash a city which generates lot of Tax, and high tech jobs for the state? You like to run those companies like Apple out of the state because you don't like their politics.

Rather have it a poor city with high crime run down buildings. Tech is the future of this country states that reject technology will end up living in the 3rd world like some states in the south.
