Not all Spanish-speakers were considered white. If they were obviously of African descent, then their experience was different. It depended on what you looked like.
There were few people like that, and those persons were minorities because they were black, not because they were Spanish Speakers. There was no concept that being a Spanish Speaker made you a minority before the 80s. White people of Spanish speaking origin were just white.

Right...it was determine by color/race, like everything else in the U.S.

Now it's not. Now an obviously white woman like Sotomayor can pretend to be a "woman of color" when she has no color and no non-European origins. And people take her seriously.
The United States has no history of ever excluding or disenfranchising people of Spanish origin. But Sotomayor pretends that she was a minority that overcame disadvantage and discrimination that never happened to her - and used this narrative to argue that she was the best choice for SCJ.

Not really. The U.S. has gone back and forth on how to classify Spanish-speakers. Also, not sure you can claim that Sotomayor has no non-European origins. While she may be majority European, most Puerto Ricans have some sort of mixture in their family. Also, you cannot state that she wasn’t ever mistreated. There was some mistreatment of people of Hispanic origin, depending on appearance and where you lived.
I make no assumptions about her background. She’s of Puerto Rican descent. A Caribbean Latina. That’s about it.

No it has not. There was no notion that Spanish speakers were minorities before the 80s. They just made that up! Spanish used to be a language like French. It never crossed anyone's mind that Speaking Spanish made a you a non-white minority like it does today.
Talcum X is one of the funniest and most appropriate nicknames I have seen ever given to anyone.
On topic: Wokesters need to update their theory. If race is a social construct, then what exactly is the problem here. A Jewish woman from Kansas has socially constructed herself as a Puertorican Latina from Bronx.
Together with that poor Rachel and these two chaps I found out about on this thread, White-Philipino and Philipino-white, who both seem nice or at least not off putting, this may be the solution to the interracial low level conflict brewing for quite a while.
If I were you, I would pray there were more of these racially confused people. And if they want to be whatever race they choose, I would applaud. Anyway, even if you don't like what Rachel and this one did, I still think that this national notoriety is a bit too much of a punishment for their crime of pretending and a bit of grifting.

Yes it has. It took them awhile to decide whether to classify Hispanics as a race or an ethnicity. Different applications said different things.

No. Mexican organizations in the 70s arbitrarily invented the concept from whole cloth and lobbied the government for it's inclusion - and the whole scam was so they could take advantage of civil rights legislation/ protections and get minority funding for their organizations.
Before then, Speaking Spanish used to make a person white. It never crossed anyone's mind that they were minorities.
