In the case of Trump disparaging US troops alive and dead, the sources are well known but their identity is being withheld at their request. Multiple news organizations (including Trump favored Fox News) have confirmed the story in the The Atlantic by speaking directly to these sources.

And media outlets have legal departments who vet stories before they are released.
Do I wish sources would have the courage to be named? Sure. Is it disqualifying if they won’t be? Not necessarily.

Most people must think reporters just pull anonymous source out of the air and call it credible.
Those sources are verified by editors, etc. before publication.
As troubled as the news paper business it appears people think publishers are not aware that readers don't trust anonymous sources.
One i am familiar with has done all kinds of research to discover who pays for papers, print and internet. And what those buyers consider credible.
Does anyone trust sensational political news articles where the origins for the shocking info are allegedly from "anonymous sources"? It seems to me that this type of journalistic feature can easily be abused by those with political bias, or those who are corrupt and willing to take dirty money to do political hit pieces.
I for one don't trust such sensational news stories, unless the sources come forward and their information can stand up to scrutiny.
But the dems have proven that it works. They successfully influenced the mid term elections with their unnamed source lies about Trump Russia collusion. They had hosts on CNN and MSNBC calling Trump a traitor for three years, based upon the lies from dozens of Trump-hating unmanned sources.
