"The sacrifice" you mentioned varies, and it varies for a number of reasons.
The experience of a commissioned officer isn't the same as that of an enlisted man or woman.
The experience of a politically connected officer isn't the same as one not so politically connected.
Not everyone enters the military with a simple desire to serve their country.
Some join to personally benefit from their time in uniform, and that is a dangerous thing.
Probably the worst possible scenario for your proposal would be the politically ambitious serving just long enough and in the right places to check all the boxes before running for office.
Let LBJ's phony fruit salad serve as a warning against making military service a political currency.
We would do well to keep politics out of the military and the military out of politics.
