I'm not sure why this idea isn't gaining/hasn't gained traction in both parties. I'd knock out two birds with one stone by overhauling the tax code to only having 2-3 brackets, removing most credits/deductions, doing away with means tested welfare, and giving every working adult citizen (if they met a relatively low income threshold to prevent 20 somethings from sitting on their butts and "rich" college kids from getting play money) a flat monthly check that acts as a refundable tax credit. The tax code and means tested welfare are monstrosities! Let's take down the arbitrary barriers to poor people earning as much as they can and building wealth!
You can't be an Uncle Tom without the name Thomas.
Thomas Sowell was my favorite editorial writer. Brilliant man and great writer. I can see you have a low tolerance for Black men who are smart and think for themselves.
Everyone complains about welfare until they need it themselves.
If Sowell wants to talk about what’s damaging to the black community, he should start with the black church. That was doing real damage long before welfare was invented.
That welfare over the long term is damaging to initiative is a no brainer. DUUUUUUUUUH!
Sowell was homeless for a while. He knows what its all about.
The National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed the Animals."
Their stated reason for the policy is because the animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves.

“If we wanted to be serious about evidence,” Sowell observed, “we might compare where blacks stood a hundred years after the end of slavery with where they stood after 30 years of the liberal welfare state….Despite the grand myth that black economic progress began or accelerated with the passage of the civil rights laws and ‘war on poverty’ programs of the 1960s, the cold fact is that the poverty rate among blacks fell from 87 percent in 1940 to 47 percent by 1960. This was before any of those programs began.”
...
In another article Sowell answered, “A vastly expanded welfare state in the 1960s destroyed the black family, which had survived centuries of slavery and generations of racial oppression. In 1960, before this expansion of the welfare state, 22 percent of black children were raised with only one parent. By 1985, 67 percent of black children were raised with either one parent or no parent.” The percentage has held fairly steady since then. And, statistically, the parent figure is usually a mother or a grandmother.
This has been well known for decades. And the KKK couldn't have produced a more destructive environment for black people if they'd kept their crosses and torches ready to hand.

Yeah, well so what? Again, there’s nothing profound in his opinion. It’s generally an accepted fact that welfare can easily sap initiative over the long term. Who didn’t know that?

This ends today's lesson
Lemme guess...you’re a conservative Republican!!
That’s the thing I like about y’all...let you talk long enough, and it always comes out.
Get rid of the black church and all religion in general. Go to school, go to college, do a stint in the military, get out, find a career, get married and have a family if you so desire. Save a little money, buy a home, be a good neighbor, and mind your own damn business.
That’s what I did. To the letter. There’s not an ounce of profundity in what I said. I revealed no secrets or anything not already known by a million other people.
So why in the hell would anyone care about my “fix” to any problem?
Guess what? I'm white and that is the exact same road map I used to get out of poverty. Unfortunately your fix requires some things that are extraordinary.
1. Sacrifice
2. Owning your own future
3. perseverance
Oh yeah and not being an idiot with your money. LOL
