Is the common cold, allergies, sinus issues and flu bundled in with Covid now? People that have a positive test one day have negative tests a few days later.
Huge emphasis was placed on the “China virus” and sort of preventing arrivals of Chinese tourists in the US.
We watched what was going on in Europe and assumed it could not happen, here. The virus spread from China to Europe to the US.
Millions poured into the NYC tri- state area from hot spots in Europe during the weeks/ months before the Federal Government restricted arrivals. There are no direct flights between Europe and Sioux Falls.
Population matters:
Sioux Falls- 182,000
NYC-8.4 million
( this does not take into account the millions who live in NJ and Ct who commute to NYC for work)
Population density matters :
Sioux Falls- 2,435/ mile
NYC- 28,000/ mile
(The Bronx-35,000/ mile)
NYC has the busiest subway system in the US and is one of the busiest in the world. Sioux Falls has limited public transportation.
NYC peaked April- May. Test kits in the US were scarce. PPE was scarce. Ventilators were scarce.
NY, like several other states, required nursing homes to readmit/ retain Covid positive patients WHEN the facility had the ability to isolate infected patients and adequate PPE. At those times past, those who worked in nursing homes were not tested, anywhere in the US. Assuming, nursing homes complied with isolation requirements, the only human interaction that occurred was with the employees who came and went each day.
NYC imposed restrictions on restaurants, bars, retail, public transportation. NYC eventually closed schools. Compliance with restrictions was hit/ miss.
We know more about Covid now than was known 6 months ago. There is more testing. There are treatments that did not exist 6 months ago. More are surviving Covid than did during the initial outbreak.
6 months is a lifetime in a pandemic.
Appears South Dakota did next to nothing to mitigate the transmission of Covid. It was only a matter of time.
Covid is surging throughout the Midwest. Wisconsin and the Army Corps built a 530 bed field hospital on fair grounds in April. It did not open.......until last week- 6 month later. The state was airlifting patients from hospitals at capacity to other hospitals in the state before running out of beds.
A field hospital is only useful, when staffed by appropriately trained healthcare workers. At least one Illinois hospital system is reassigning some people to Wisconsin.
Given that surge in all states bordering Illinois, it is only a matter of time before Chicago is hit once again.
Comparing South Dakota to NY is a poor analogy to say the least particularly using numbers in April. South Dakota had 6 months to prepare for this and with their low density and lack of subways, major airports and subway systems should have made it easy to control the virus. Instead they made believe the virus would behave differently than it did on the east coast and they were immune.
One or both of you have a problem with math. I'm not going to try to figure out which.
The flu has killed 40,000 a year average over the last 10 years. The Wuhan virus has killed 200,000 this year. That's only 5 times as many.
We never shut down schools, airports and businesses for the flu, just imagine the number if we treated this like the flu. We are only in October and this began in February, only 8 months in and we had the benefit that this hit in late winter early spring.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s administration announced Tuesday that it is using federal coronavirus relief funds to pay for a $5 million tourism ad campaign aimed at drawing people to the state, even as it emerges as one of the nation’s top hot spots for COVID-19 infections.
Noem spokesman Ian Fury defended using the federal coronavirus funds for the ads, saying that the state “should absolutely be promoting tourism” because it is vital to South Dakota’s economy. After agriculture, it is the state’s largest industry.

It really wouldn't be all that different except the curve would be sharper up in april and sharper down in june.

I heard that people who have had colds and flu have tested positive. I think the true test is the antibodies test or whatever it's called where you can see if you actually had Covid but didn't know it. Then you don't have to worry about getting it or giving it. If more people got that test, I bet we'd see massive numbers of people who fall into that category. Which would mean this illness if far less lethal than we've been lead to believe.
well at the time we didn't know about that. Cuomo will be in serious trouble. SD doesn't get marks for how they handled this because NY mishandled their response. There really haven't been that many good responses across America that have balanced health and safety with responsible reopening.
