And Pence does indeed cast the tie-breaker in the Senate.
Let's say that Amy Barrett gets nominated. Barrett is deeply Catholic and therefore deeply anti-abortion. Romney is deeply Mormon and therefore deeply anti-abortion. Probably the two most solidly anti-abortion religions in existence that I'm aware of. If it's Barrett or somebody similar, Romney will vote to confirm guaranteed. Romney might hate Trump's guts, but he's still capable of rational thought and he still believes in what he believes in.

I see no way Collins or Murkowski vote for the nominee. But I see Romney voting for the nominee. Note, even if Romney votes against the nominee, I don't see any other GOP Senators breaking rank on this issue. There really aren't any "moderate" GOP Senators outside of that bunch.

I suspect that many herein support the rule back then, but feel free to jettison it now.

No, that is not correct.

Any senator not voting will presumably abstain. That is not the same as voting no.

So, if three Republican senators abstain, and all the rest vote along party lines, that would be 50-47.

Nomination confirmed.

That was absolutely the right off the cuff reaction. Someone looking for me saying something good about Trump? Here you go. Thank you Trump for those kind words.
