Or, failing that, can they vote to have a limited time for a hearing - say, one day - and THEN move to the vote?
The actual answer to the question is no.
however, the senate is governed by the senate rules. What the rules are today can be changed by the majority.

So in this case, the LAW in play is the Constitution which only requires the senate give "Advice and consent". How that A&C looks is entirely up to the senate and is controlled entirely by the majority.

If the republicans want a process that is a simple up/down vote they can make that the rules.

If the candidates are Barbara Lagoa or Amy Coney Barrett, both women have been thoroughly vetted by the Senate already when they were confirmed for their current roles on the Courts of Appeal.

To answer the OP's question: no, the Senate is not required to have a hearing prior to a vote as a matter of law. Any language on hearings is custom or a part of Senate rules, which can be amended whenever. Still, I expect a hearing.

So the Dems have displayed what there type of "vetting" is and it damages the country. It was stupid politics from them and they are now reaping what they sowed.
The Democrats lost Senate seats in 2018 over that debacle.

I think we can expect a very divisive hearing based on the republicans change of heart.

They will do Biden a huge favor a by not holding a hearing for a lifetime supreme court appointment, that will remove any doubt about the republican party's integrity what little is left.

Christine Blassy Ford made a fortune and became a Hollyweird hero for all her invented lies and character assassinations about Kavanaugh— can you imagine all the democrat hoaxsters just waiting and scheming to get their 20minutes if fame and Go Fund Me money ???!

In ordinary times that would be the case. Do you really think they wouldn't make stuff up about her like they did with the cleanskin Kavanaugh? Do you think they have changed their spots in the last 2 years? I see no evidence of that.

The democrats lost 2 of the 10 senate seats in states that Trump carried in 2016, you read in too much. The GOP lost 41 seats in the house.

Yep, it continues to be a painful reminder of their disastrous strategy.

I sometimes have some sympathy for them. This last 4 years has just been one giant recurring nightmare. How much can someone take......

They had their future all mapped out with Hillary; a new era of Dem dominance.... And I think they are feeling deja vu all over again!
