What an utterly moronic statement. Of course the US is a democracy. It's a democratic republic. No political scientist or rational individual would ever argue that the US is a democracy. Go away.

Simply Google foreign takes on American politics, and they're a dime-a-dozen. You have German magazines writing fake accounts of visits to small-town America. Articles from Canadians wishing for the downfall of the US. Endless Tweets from insecure British people personally insulting Americans, and projects of British nationals writing letters to Americans, insulting them, lecturing them on who they should vote for in their own presidential elections (see "Operation Clark County"). Behold the extensive "what Europeans think of Americans" articles and videos, full of disgusting hypocrisy and insults beyond anything Americans ever care to direct at Europe.

The Wikipedia article on "Anti-Americanism" is extremely extensive.

Americans don't AT ALL CARE about other country's politics. You are full of **** if you seriously try to even the field on this one and pretend like Americans are remotely concerned with other country's affairs as much as everyone obsesses over America. Soft Power studies indicate that America ranks number under categories like "affairs I follow closely". The attention is absolutely, undeniably, obsessively one-sided.

The hypocrisy is solidly with the Anti-Americans on this one. They insult the US, but get bruised and whine about how mean and arrogant Americans are if we bite back, which we usually don't, because Americans are too nice and self-hating for our own good.
Thank you this. The problem is that we can never have honest discussions about this since many Americans are xenophiles and deflect and gaslight other Americans. It is not common at all for an american to go up to say a Russian, Indian, Korean and start screaming or lecturing them on something wrong their countries does.

Here is an article in a British newspaper that garnered over a thousand replies complaining about how Americans write the date (Monday day, year compared to the global standard of day , month, year or year, month, day) You are NEVER going to find the new york times or washington post write such a silly article, let alone be met with angry responses by US born and bred people. They are obsessed and angry over things that have no bearing on their lives. It goes beyond legit hate of US foreign policy or US business practices.

Don't get me started on them being angry we don't like soccer or have the gall to call it soccer rather than "football" Americans aren't offended if people don't like US football or baseball. The idea of being angry is just preposterous.

Second, none of these countries are multiracial like the US is! None of these countries ever evolved past a much more strict ethno-racial sense of belonging. Even now, their white majorities are much larger than the US's. Racial minorities simply have not made up a remotely large chunk of these country's populations, quite the opposite of how multiracial the US has been from the beginning. They all love to believe that they are as multiracial and diverse as the US - but they just aren't.

Their notions of multiracialism and equality were all heavily inspired by the American civil rights movement. It was America, in the west, that is the only country that actually has had any successful experience with extensive, long-standing multiracial integration.

But no, they think they know better.

Because all euros hear is CNN which promotes the socialist democrat line that all white men are racist nad BLM org demands cops stop hunting doen and killing black men, Disney declares many of its classic offerings hurtful.

Why wouldn't euro's preach after being exposed to communist style propaganda. After all that's all the americans who do not watch FOX are exposed to.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter what country the criticism comes from. If their arguments are right (not propagating invented conspiracies) then you need to answer in a matter of fact manner. Also unlike many Europeans, Americans who were born and raised in a specific culture do not travel or experience other countries, societies and cultures. If you live all your life in one place, you can’t view reality in a broader sense. That’s not true only with civil rights, minorities and immigration, but in all aspects of life.

Maybe I can contribute to this thread by first hand experience. I live in Europe and have traveled the US extensively. I've been to 16 states and interacted with many Americans of different demographics, ethnics and backgrounds.

Actually, I've found that American people are the least racist. Here in the EU people tolerate other ethnic groups on the surface but there is barely any social interactions and deep inside the average European do not have a good opinion of African or Arab residents. Even wealthy black exchange students say that they feel belittled here in the central/eastern parts of the EU.

What I see is that the US media is the one to blame for promoting this idea that America is a racist country. I have never met friendlier and more open-minded and tolerant people than the ones I met in the US. America is a melting pot historically. Europe is homogenic. Believe me, Europeans are much more racist on average.

Foreigners particularly Europeans can't claim they are super smart and worldly while also claiming to believe everything on the news. India has a rape problem, but I would never assume that it happens at every corner. The Netherlands has a sex trafficking issue but I don't and wouldn't believe every corner is a woman in sex slavery. People need to stop blaming the US for other countries ignorance. Especially when people claim Americans are gullible and are brainwashed by the media. Critical thinking is important.

The Guardian article from 2013 relates to the datablog section of the newspaper, which deals with data information hence the interest in the US system of recording the date.

As for the comments related to the article, I should imagine that many come from Americans themselves, although I think the conversation may be limited to data geeks who actually take an interest in the Guardian datablog section rather than normal people.

I also really don't think many Britons care what the US calls football/soccer, and I also doubt the average Brit has much of a view with regards to how the US chooses to write the date.
