I’ve begun to think more strongly that Biden will pull out of this first debate. A COVID diagnosis certainly would be the perfect foil. Then his sycophants can “rally” behind his “amazing” recovery. Not entirely implausible.

He won't back down. It would be too much fodder for Trump.
Trump needs to pull one out, though, and run circles around him.
Both are prone to letting things get under their skin. Trump needs to use his advantages to goad Biden into losing track and focus.
There's the famous tale of how the televised Nixon/Kennedy debate shifted the election toward Kennedy. Trump needs to look better and do better in comparison, and he'll drive home the "Senile Biden" message well.
He cannot blow this opportunity being handed to him. Hopefully they prep him well.
He'll be pumped full of whatever top of the line drugs there are for temporary stamina and some clarity of mind. LOL
Biden won't do great and Trump will make him look old, slow, low energy and an early dementia patient.
Voters on the fence will probably see how feeble and ailing Biden is.

Trump can't go out and just bash the guy nonstop. He could hurt his chances with independents/moderate Democrats on the fence.
Trump needs to hammer away at Biden's corruption, his 47 years in the DC swamp, his ties to China, high taxes and socialism, and his inability to be viewed as a strong leader due to his mental state.
Biden destroyed Palin and Paul Ryan in the debates he is no slouch when it comes to debating.
